Hi,
I was wanting some feedback. I am either looking for a capture card that will bypass Macrovision or a device that will allow it. I have a ATI AIW 7500, I have tried everyting under the sun to get this thing to capture my old VHS tapes. I have tried every hack published I think, but still no go. I want to have backups of all the old tapes I have spent years building a library of. I am trying to stay under $50 for this so try not to laugh. Does such a thing exist? If you could, please reply with tried and tested hardware recommendations, not "I read that...." Thanks for any insight you can give.

:)

Hi,

Just get an old TV Tuner card with the BT878 chip and you will be all set, I use an old AverTV Stereo and I have never, never had problems with that crap called Macrovision.

Almost every capture card ever made ignores Macrovision. ATI is the exception. Buy a Lifeview FlyTV or Leadtek TV2000XP Expert or similar.

Almost all hardware can detect the presence of the macrovision signal. It is up to the driver to do something with this information and set the screen to black or put a bar across the picture. Some drivers simply ignore it, like BTWincap, some drivers don't. Some drivers can be made to ignore it with a hack (like those of some older ATI cards)

So you may see that from one driver generation to the next, the same capcard suddenly starts blocking macrovision protected contents or even the reverse.

If you find a driver/card combo that works, keep the driver in a safe place :)

I purchased an ATI TV Wonder VE (PCI) for $30 on sale. It has a BT878A chipset, so I installed the btwincap driver (not ATI's driver). I've had absolutely no Macrovision problems.

Has anyone had experience with the Plextor PX-AV100U or PX-M402U and their Macrovision issues?

Hi, I just wanted to follow up. With the few responses I received, I researched the issue a little more. The cards and devices recommended to me would not specifically say that they would have solved my problem or not. I really did not want to "try" things that some people had success with and others did not. My solution was to acquire a device called DVD Red Pro. It looked perfect but I was a little wary if this was some scam or not. From what I found out was there was no one who forumed that it was a scam, but only had a few people actually said that they got one and tried it. I got on their web site and ordered one paying by Paypal. I did not get a confirmation email, so I got a little worried. About a week later, I received an overseas parcel and happily tried it out. I had my own power supply and used my own RCA cables and hooked it up. I put in one of my problem movies and presto, it was perfect. It used to go dark/light about every 10 seconds but now nothing. It captures a picture about as good as my VCR can put out. I am very pleased and am happy to recommend it. I hope this helps others.

:D

I too was thinking of buying DVD Red Pro, the website claims it removes Macrovision and CGMS-A. Have you, or anyone else, had any experience with removing CGMS-A with this device or any other. I am looking to use it for a Media Center 2005 PC.

HBO, Showtime, etc. now use CGMS-A to plug the "analog hole" and Media Center honors this flag.
