View Full Version : Rip movie-only, but with Chapter markers?

I would like to make DVD-R backups of some of my most-watched DVD movies, to protect the originals and also to eliminate some of the garbage one has to go thru to get to playing the main movie. So I would like to make a "first play" DVD (plug it in and it plays the movie). No menus needed (or wanted!).

But in addition to ripping the movie, I would like to RETAIN the chapter markers on the original disc, not for use from a menu, just to be able to skip to key scenes in the movie.

How to rip and retain chapter markers?
If I have to make my own chapter markers, what is the best tool to do this? On another board it was suggested that CloneDVD2 might do this, but it's a $50 program.

Any easy way to do it with freeware ie. without completely reauthoring?

DVD Shrink definitely does. It's freeware laserfan. You can even chop off the credits and the lame studio intros, if you like.

DVD Shrink definitely does... Thanks blutach, I will look at it more closely. I have DVD Shrink and have used it fer sher, but I gotta admit that I have such a bewildering array of tools (incl. Shrink, Decrypter, SmartRipper, IfoEdit, AutoGK, FairUseWizard, etc. just to name a few) that's it's nigh-to-impossible to figure out what each one does especially given the many Settings avail. for each.

DVD Shrink will do what you want to do and more and its very easy to use.

Thanks,

They were almost all TV series.

These are titles I'm counting and not individual disks. If I were to count individual disks I would be closer to 1500 disks burned. I'm surprized I haven't worn out my DVD burner yet:)

Well, I looked high-and-low thru DVD Shrink's various settings/dialogs and couldn't find a thing about saving chapter markers. So I just tried it, and on a disc where I used the "shrink" capability as well (for the first time--I'm paranoid about re-encoding anything).

Man, did this proggie work slick, or what! Less than an hour to re-do 7.2Gb to 4.7, and while I haven't checked it on "the big screen" yet, it looked darn good on my PC.

Couple lessons: First, you can't tell a book by its cover! There's more to this program than I thought (or even understand as I write this), and Second, there's no substitute for experience. You gotta play with this stuff.

It's still not clear to me how to specify certain things (like "keep warnings or don't") but I will be using it more in the future for certain. Thanks for exposing it as a sol'n to my inquiry, and perhaps much more!

After you have clicked re-author, you can right click on the title and select "Set Start/End Frames" and it will allow you to check out where the chapter breaks are, and verify that they exist.

You can even cut off the credits from the end or the studio ads at the beginning from here if you want.

Very cool feature, if you ask me.

You may even want to investigate the "video" - custom, automatic, still immage and still picture features in full disk mode. You can blank out unwanted extras or adjust the bitrate on these to give more quality to the movie. Its a great app for doing regular length movies.

I did today visit the home page, and discovered that while a Guide page is referenced (here somewhere in fact on doom9) and I do remember visiting it before, it does itself have further links buried within it to give more details on how things are used. DUH! Don't know how I missed them the 1st time around. Though in my defense, it still doesn't say anywhere "retains chapter markers".

Anyway, there is clearly much more depth to this program than I had originally thought. Thanks to everyone here for chipping-in.
