View Full Version : Strange color behaviour while capturing from VHS

I use my ATI X800 Pro VIVO to capture Videos from my S-VHS Recorder. As capture Program i use VirtualDub.
At some scenes (special when i have a white background or a black background with a face) it seems that the contrast gets up, which means that you see just only a white screen. If i show the same scene on a TV it looks perfect, so it can't be the Recorder. It seems that anything is adjusting something.
Thanks for your help!

You may want to do a search on Macrovision and see if this is your issue.

Hi!
Thanks for your answer.
I thought its Macrovision too, but after a Macrovision Hack it apears too. It can't be Macrovision, because the Tapes are free of it.

Some ATI cards (or drivers?) are extremely sensitive, and the slightest instability in the signal can trigger the "Macrovision detection" circuit and ruin your capture. (At least, I believe that's what's happening.)
I'd say about 3/4 of my VHS collection suffers the same symptoms you describe, using my ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 AGP. And I know that none of these tapes actually utilizes Macrovision.
I never was able to defeat its Macrovision detection using any software patch or hardware box. Ultimately I bought a cheap ATI TV Wonder VE card for $30. This has a BT878A chip and no Macrovision detection. I use it now for all of my VHS captures and I'm very happy. :)

I allready thought on this last night. It is very strange, and looks realy like a Macrovision protection. But that ATI has problems with that is realy strange.
I will get a TV-Card and try it out.
Thanks for your Answer.
