Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere, but none of the guides seem to tackle this particular problem.

I am going on an extended vacation, long flights - no in-flight movies so I carry my own, but not wanting to take and possibly lose my originals I want to back them up. I would like to keep the extras, since well, I'm on vacation and need things to occupy my time.

The issue is this - there are some season DVDs that I want to copy, however, they are DVD9s and handling the split seems a bit different as the guides deal with movies in which case the VTS_01_X.VOB files are the ones needed. However, my DVD has the main files like this, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_02_1.VOB,VTS_03_1.VOB,...VTS_13_1.VOB.

I've used DVDXCopy before, however, the last episode DVD I burned wouldn't play on regular DVD players because (I guess) of the DVDXCOPY screen it adds - since they work fine on my PCs. I've also done just the movie and left out extras when I'm going on flights. But the episode DVDs have me stumped. Any suggestions? I already have DVD Decryptor, IFOEdit and ImgTool along with Nero6. What do I need to do in order to acomplish this DVD9->DVD5 conversion?

Many thanks in advance.

DVDShrink is easy to use, well documented, and a good starting point if you don't have a lot of ripping experience. It's a fine compromise of time invested versus the quality of your backups. Here are some of the guides available:

ddlooping's DVDShrink Guides (http://www.dvdshrink.info/index.php)
Doom 9's DVDShrink Guide (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvdshrink31-main.htm)
Mrbass' DVDShrink Guide (http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink)

This response doesn't directly address your question on splitting your backup files, but after reading up on Shrink and running a backup or two, you might not be interested in split points. :)

Backups playing on the PC but not on a standalone player usually indicate incompatible/inferior media. You must use media that not only your burner can handle, but your standalone will recognize, as well. Do some research using these links. Get stuck, post back with as much information as you can; too much is not enough...and likely never will be.
