This is a Follow-up to Analog Capture Cards thread
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=87266
I just got this card (thanks to folx on this forum).
http://www.comprousa.com/products/vmtvultra.htm
Got it from http://www.newegg.com for $77 with shipping.
I immediately uninstalled LifeView FlyVideo 3000FM and installed this card.
FlyVideo 3000FM perfectly worked with Fly2000 TV program in native mode. Obviously Fly2000 doesn't support native mode for Compro Ultra card yet (hopefully *yet*).
I still did test captures from VCR and LaserDisc player using WDM mode with Fly2000 capture software.
VCR used: JVC 5700 multisystem with S-Video and Composite out.
SECAM Composite in from VCR:
The image quality is horrible. There are huge thick horizontal lines across all the picture. Moreover, the picture is unstable: Frames shake and turn over almost every second. You know when you read a book, you turn the pages over. Same here, it can not lock the signal.
SECAM S-Video in from VCR: The picture quality is great, however, it can NOT lock the signal. So the same thing: every second the frames turn over like pages in the book. I don't know whether it is a hardware problem or driver problem.
PAL S-Video in from VCR: the picture is perfect. No visible artifacts.
PAL Composite in from VCR: the picture is much worse than from S-Video. The colors are a bit different and there're tiny diagonal lines go across the image from top right to bottom left and from top left to bottom right forming the jail window.
NTSC S-Video in from VCR: the picture is perfect.
NTSC Composite in from VCR. Now there are 3 custom modes in Y/C separation.
1. 2D + 3D - default. Picture quality produced a lot of noise. I didn't like it at all.
2. 3D only. Same thing. The picture produced a lot of noise.
3. 2D + Noise Reduction. Here the picture was almost as good as that on S-Video. I couldn't see any visible difference. But the thing is that my FlyVideo card gave the same image quality using composite in and I couldn't tell the difference from S-Video.
I also couldn't find the way to turn this 3D or whatever filtering off. They should provide such a way.
Next testing:
NTSC Composite video from LaserDisc player Pioneer Elite CLD-52.
This is the only test where this card beats the crap out of FlyVideo.
In all 3 modes the picture quality was superb. FlyVideo gave me the grainy picture unless I lowered sharpness to -5 value. Now going to LaserDisc player->ComproCard->Matrox TV out->TV gave way better image quality than going LaserDisc Player->TV in all 3 modes. (I actually couldn't see the difference between any of the Y/C modes).
TV Tuner.
Unfortunately I don't have cable now. However, I do get a couple of public channels. The quality on those channels was way better than on actual TV. The noise was filtered out so the card did a very good job.
The other thing is that they don't have support in US. You need to e-mail them. And the turnaround time can be up to 5 days. I sent them e-mail yesterday and I'm still to get a reply. If the problem with SECAM and with PAL is not resolved, I'll be returning the card with the hope that there will be some other Philips based capture cards in the future with Y/C separation.
