View Full Version : DVD Shrink can't find VIDEO_TS.VOB

I ripped a DVD to my hard drive, and no VIDEO_TS.VOB was created. After checking the DVD there was no such file there either, so that makes sense. But DVD Shrink claims it can't find this file. Not a problem, I figure, I'll just make a blank one (which has worked before) and then open it. Surprise! It still claims it can't find the file.

Is there any way to load the DVD in DVD Shrink without this file? Trying it as an .ISO file didn't work either.

Try doing a mock strip (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84097) on your VIDEO_TS.IFO.

This is strange behaviour from a commercial DVD.

If 2COOL's method doesn't work (and it should), try ripping it again.

If that still doesn't work, first save your IFOs in a different folder.

Open VIDEO_TS.IFO in IfoEdit.

First, find out how large your VIDEO_TS.IFO is (in kilobytes eg 40k). Half it (20) and subtract 1 (19).

1. Navigate to VMGM_MAT.
2. Enter the 19 (or whatever) at byte 0001c (last sector of VMGI - this should already be fine).
3. Now add half the size to that (39) and enter that at byte 000c (last sector of VMG).
4. Ensure byte 00c0 is 0.
5. Navigate to VMGM_C_ADT and make byte 0000 (number of VOBIDS) = 0
6. Save.
7. Hit Get VTS Sectors and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the tips!

The mock strip unfortunately isn't working; when I open VIDEO_TS.IFO, the "VOB Extras" button is blanked out. I followed your steps, blutach, and the DVD now previews correctly through IFOEdit, but I'm still getting the same error from DVD Shrink.

You needed to do a Menu Extras mock strip, not VOB extras.

I have added another step - do 5, 6 and 7 and try again.

In fact, change eveything to 0 in VMGM_C_ADT - there's no VIDEO_TS.VOB, so there should be no cell address table.

Good luck

Couple of other things to try - disable DVD Region Free, if you have it on.

Also, if you have changed the defaults in DVD Decrypter, changed them back and rip again. Some people have had luck in doing this.

Still no dice. The menu extra mock strip didn't even create any new files, and changing the hex code you described had no effect.

Thanks for your help, I'm gonna leave this DVD for now and come back to it later. I'll let you know if I figure out what the problem was.

Open up your VIDEO_TS.IFO in IfoEdit and go to VMGM_PGCI_UT. Do you have a non-zero value for Number of VMGM_PGCI_LUs (Language Units)?

Knew I'd missed something :(

Still, there can be LUs and no VIDEO_TS.VOB file. They can just be dummy PGCs.

Or am I missing something, again?

Yup, 1 language unit.

The DVD is the Traffic Criterion Edition disc 1, if anyone has it and wants to try for themselves.

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.

Failed to open file "C:\DVD_VIDEO\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.VOB"

The system cannot find the file specified.

@master ninja

This from mpucoder - check out your VIDEO_TS.IFO for this.

There are a number of things that can hint that there is, or should be, a VIDEO_TS.VOB or VTS_xx_0.VOB. If present without the file a player could go nuts.

First of all, if it is empty it should not be mentioned in the ifo or any file system - ie remove it and all references to it.

If there is no VIDEO_TS.VOB:
(VMGM_MAT)
VIDEO_TS.IFO location 0xc0 to 0xc3 should be 0 (indicates location of vob)
VIDEO_TS.IFO locations 0xd8 to 0xdb should be 0. If not it means you have a cell address table for the vob (which has to be removed).
VIDEO_TS.IFO locations 0xdc to 0xdf should be 0. If not it means you have a VOBU address map for the vob (also needs to be removed)
VIDEO_TS.IFO locations 0x100 to 0x1ff should all be zero except location 0x100 IF PAL, in which case it should be 0x10 (to agree with the rest of the video attributes tv system).
And all menus listed in all LU must have number of programs and number of cells = 0.

The same is true for any titleset, but the ifo file is obviously the one for that titleset. If you look above, we didn't check on location d8, dc and 100 on. Change them to 0 and you should be OK.

Good luck
