As long as you can afford to buy 2 blank DVDs (which are quite cheap these days)per DVD,DVDFab is the best DVD backup solution, isn't it? no quality loss...

What do you think?

DVD95COPY is best for me. it all depends on what you want or need from an application. thats why "what is best" posts are discouraged.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Use what looks best to your eyes

There are pleanty of free programs out there to use such as shrink dvd-rb. Why pay when you can get apps that in my opinion work just as well as the ones you pay for.

Of course it's the best quality. Nothing can be better than original DVD quality left unchanged.

I dont know dvdfab sry Sorry, but doom9 himself says this won't be happening soon. To do with demand, development cost recovery etc.

So, you've plenty of time for 9-5 copies yet.

To vinib:
Hi.
I think it is dangerous to give personal opinions about DVD back up transcoder programs. If you want to have an idea how they are, you could try some of them, that's mean: DVDFab, DVD Shrink, Nero Recode, Pinacle Instant Copy, CloneDVD, DVD2ONE, DVD95Copy, Apollo DVD Copy, A4 DVD Shrinker... to name just a few. At least, for me, it is impossible to test all af them, first of all, because they are not free (Except DVD Shrink).
Anyway, if you are able to test all of them, you can tell us what is the best for you... that will take a little bit of money ;) .
However, I think all the programs I've said before, are going to give you a nice result, the rest it is just personal.
Greetings! :)

DVDFab didn't worked for me at all...

I made a comparision of 7 different programs, see
http://www.maxt.dk/archives/2005/01/26/the-best-way-to-backup-dvd/

Maybe that'll help :)

"DVDFab didn't worked for me at all..."

The old versions didn't work for me either, but 2.50 beta 1 works great.
I get an exact duplicate on 2 disks, with the same menu on both.
The quality is exactly the same as the original. No transcoder or recoder can compare.

After buying DVD Fab then getting burned when it was sold to the new owners, who in turn wanted me to buy it again, I said screw DVD Fab.

Sure, but you have to have 2 discs for every dvd9 movie (This can add up after 100 or so movies), not to mention swapping out discs in the middle of the movie... I will trade a small amount of quality for the convenience of one dvd and no swapping any day. Just my opinion. To each his own.

EDIT: I use DVD-RB though, which uses CCE, so its not like Im using a transcoder, so quality is about as good as your going to get from a re-encoded video stream.

I use dvdshrink and nothing else...
Not interested in splitting up the movie unless its 3 hours long or more...
The quality hit is not noticeable to me and I watch stuff on my 42inch HDTV monitor all the time.

I agree. I don't back up every movie on 2 dvdr's, just the ones that are important to me.
On Concert DVD's that have a DTS soundtracks etc. I almost always use 2 disks. I hate losing the capability of playing it at a later date when I will have better equipment.

DVD Shrink can't split 1 DVD9 to 2 DVD5...
well if you are just doing main movie you could use the reauthor section to cut and output 2 halves with no compression. thus splitting a dvd9 to 2 dvd5. :)

or for tv eps you could do the same. say you have 4 episodes, use reauthor to split 2 to each dvd5. you could even add a menu with something like titlewriter to select each episode.

Of course it can, you can even keep the original menus when using re-author mode and start/end frame to split the movie.

Weird enough, I haven't noticed such feature under options (I could choose DVD5 or DVD9 (DL) as output, not 2 DVD5). Ah well... :)

since when ? adding titles in reauthor mode add them as a list to playback in order. i have never seen anywhere that that has been changed to keep the menus working as normal. will have to check that out tommorow. :)

I have used dvdfab for about a month now(the free trial version) and have backed up numerous dvds and compared the original to the copy and there is no noticeable drop in anything. It is very easy to use...havent tried any other program since I am totally satisfied with the new dvdfab program. It is very fast too. As I said my two cents worth, but I have bought the full program since I am happy with the trial(which is a full working version for a month). Any other program comparisons might help with other's descision of what one to use.

There is no compression, therefore it should be digitally exactly the same.

there appears to be several version now. with the gold version you can split etc so no compression. with the express version you have a transcoder so will shrink larger dvds to 1. and platinum has both. well thats how i read it anyway. :)

DVDFAB Gold is like old free version of DVDFAB. Not sure if many remember but when dvdfab came out to me it was a huge thing because the now defunct 321 Studios (sleazeballs) were advertising DVDXCopy which did the same thing but you wouldn't know it till you spent $99 at Fry's at took it home and only then would you realize that it was splitting the discs (nothing wrong with that but at least mention that in your product advertisement..dvdfab did but DVDXCopy deceived). It wasn't till many months later they came out with a transcoding software of their own. Why sleazeballs....just ask doom9 and he'll agree...they packaged dvd freeware and sold it as their own with a manual and I believe did it until they persihed.

DVDFAB Express is new and has transcoding built-in like dvd2one, etc.
DVDFAB Platinum = Gold + Express. All have 30 day trials and all have built-in decryption and burning capabilities.

yep. i am pretty sure i even mentioned how many copies they had sold up to 1 point in the DVDx vs dvdbackup thread in the general section. millions ,for those that dont know, for writing a guide which from what i was told was not even very good. also having comunicated with mr.moore(head of 321) briefly i can say he was(is?) an A grade asshole who was(is?) only interested in linig his own pockets.

and this is getting off topic. :)

Just tried DVD Fab Platinum, trial version, to put long movie on 2 discs, and it worked great. This is a feature I've been looking for, so I'm happy. Then I was trying to burn a disc that I had some various VOB's, and I had used IFO Edit to create IFO's. The last VOB had some picture slides, and apparently this caused a problem in DVD Shrink. It noted some error with file #5 and wouldn't complete the process. So I tried DVD Fab, and it worked with out a hitch, so in my view it's good to have several programs to go to, if one is being temperamental.
