I've been using DVDrb+CCE for about my last 30 backups... all very nice visually.

I was just wondering what DVDrb sees as "extras". Is it any set of files other than the largest (presumably the main movie), or is there a special marker of some sort in the file structure DVDrb looks for?

So, if I open up a DVD in DVD Shrink first, and look at what it lists as "extras", are those the only files DVDrb will steal space from, or will it also steal space from menus, etc.

I'm asking because on a couple backups I used DVD Shrink to compress some large motion menus as far as I could with analysis and error correction, back it all up to files, then ran them all through DVDrb+CCE.

Was this a waste of time or do you think I actually made some extra space for my main movie by using shrink on the large menus first?

Thanks!

It's my understanding that DVD-RB simply assumes the largest video to be the main movie and the other video steams to be extras. This would obviously be a problem on episodic discs so you'd need to turn off steal space for them. The other thing is, DVD-RB doesn't touch the menus, it just copies them over from the source without reencoding. As the menus can be really big (LOTR extended) using shrink to compress or even reauthoring the disc to completely remove menus can be a good idea.
