Hi
I've got some Files which are encoded with QPEL and GMC Options enabled. Unfortunately my Hardware Player does not support those options.
Does anybody know how to transcode the files to another format, so that they are ok for my Hardware.
Preferably I'd like them to stay in MPEG-4 (Xvid, Divx, ...) if this is possible.
Thanks for your reply

Hello, and welcome to the forum.
You won't like the look of a low bitrate MPEG-4 -> MPEG-4 encoding. You will be much happier recreating your DivX or Xvid from the original content.
Doom9 doesn't have an AVI -> AVI guide; and the easy-to-use Auto Gordian Knot does not yet support AVI input.
In the meantime, you might consider using Gordian Knot, a more complex encoding suite of tools to use. Doom9 has DivX/XviD Guides (http://www.doom9.org/divx-encoding.htm), but these guides assume sources are DVD. You should do several DVD -> AVI encodes using GKnot and the applicable guide prior to attempting an AVI -> AVI encode.
This is not a guide, this is a recommendation of steps for a simple AVI->AVI encode for someone already familiar with GKnot and its included tool VirtualDubMod:
Demux audio from the original .avi file. Using VdubMod, open the .avi, use the Streams...Stream list command, select the soundtrack, and press the Demux button.
Open the .avi file in GKnot.
On the Resolution tab, in the Input Pixel Aspect Ratio section, select 1:1.
On the Bitrate tab in the Audio A section, press the Select button and choose your demuxed audio file.
When starting the encoding job, in the Audio 1 tab, select the demuxed audio file again, and click on Just Mux.
Hi
You're absolutly right, it would be much better to recreate the video from the original material, unfortunately I haven't got that anymore :(
Would it be better, quality wise, to convert the MPEG-4 to MPEG-2, the size of the file doesn't matter that much?

...unfortunately I haven't got that anymore...
What was your original material?

It was a DVB.

The answer on MPEG-2 vs. MPEG-4 is "it depends" -- there are many variables to consider, not just bitrate. I would probably stick with MPEG-4, just to avoid having to resize to SVCD or DVD resolutions.

Many thanks for your advice.
I'll go for the MPEG-4 -> MPEG-4 conversation first and see what the result will be before looking into the MPEG-2 stuff.
