I'm just wondering when the mp4 file output creator will be back in DivX?
"Removed MP4creator and the MPEG-4 file output option due to some compliance issues. This will return in our next release once these issues are resolved."
This is taken from DivX 5.0.3 which was released over a year back, and it sure has been more than one release of DivX since then.

since DivX seems to be working on their own container format (derived from the news about DIvX6) i think you can pretty much forget about it...

just to avoid confusion: dxn didnt work on an own container format, but simply hacks new stuff into .avi
as one of their big goals is keeping backwards compatibility with old (hardware) players i assume these hacks (eg menus) will not break the .avi file format itself (so its not a "new, own container format") and therefore as i see it these files will be playable by any current player capable of handling .avi
there are two major additions:
1) menus have been already said to be simply ignored by existing .avi players
2) subtitles werent mentioned, but as alexnoe's tool showed are integretable in .avi without breaking existing players (splitters), like the windows dshow .avi splitter can handle them too
i dont think dxn has an interest in making their subs incompatible with the m$ dshow avi splitter

Its not simply hacking it im affraid; they are extending it. Hacks make use of certain "bugs" in parsers or unclarity in the specs. But these DivX AVIs are not really AVIs anymore, they go beyond the specs. They probably will be backward compatible (where the subs and menus are not shown) though, since an AVI parser must ignore junk data. The situation is similar to what Vidomi has done in the past i think. (I'm just speculating though, but I don't think they'll use alexnoe's way of implementing subs)
Perhaps someone should come up with some sort of naming convention though (preferably DivX), since simply calling these files AVI is a bit confusing. Perhaps something like "extended AVI" or "DivX AVI" would do.

its still the same format: .avi
used in a backwards compatible way...
