Isn't ATRAC3 used for Sony's MiniDisc walkman?

Yes.

ATRAC3 is not used much anymore, even though it was pretty good quality at 132 kbps. In RA10, ATRAC3 was replaced by AAC (and HE-AAC). Recently, even Sony themselves have finally released portable "MP3 players" that can actually play MP3. Sorry for the OT remark.

What was good about ATRAC3 was the low CPU usage :)

he-aac is different in this case ;)

Now that is interesting. Sorry for bringing this topic up again.
@ Karl,
do you know the reason for choosing Sony's ATRAC3 as being the format of choice for RA8?
Sirber

licensing cost?

cook/G2 does not scale too well beyond 96 kbps and we needed a good codec for higher bitrates. What decided the choice, I think, as Sirber suggested, was licensing costs _at that time_. To clarify, MP3 or AAC are by no means free. There are IP (patent) pools for both that require commercial users to pay substantial amount of fees.... ATRAC3 might have been the cheapest solution at that time. As you all know, RA10 chose AAC as its solution for the same problem, and ATRAC3 is no longer supported as an encoding choice. Licensing costs change, as the IP owners change theirs minds over time....

ATRAC3 ... was pretty good quality at 132 kbps. thats more like a myth, karl
one look at rjamorims comparison tells everything:

look at mp3 (lame) vs. wma9 too ;)

Yes, I guess so. rjamorims's listening tests show the ultimate truth, after all ;)
