View Full Version : problem with AutoGK and resolution

Hi, a few questions here so bear with me.
I'm trying to convert a DVD stream to XviD and I'm pretty new to all of this. I downloaded AutoGK and read the guide. It is pretty straightforward but I'm having a problem with encoded video resolution. My original video is DVD, 24fps, 720x480. In the advanced options, I can choose the resolution of the output AVI file, and even if I choose "max" or set it to 640, it comes out as 538 x something. Now, in addition to the obvious question of why is it 538 and not 640, why is my max allowable resolution 640 and not 720? BTW I read a FAQ that said that your DVD player "shrinks" the resolution before displaying it on a TV, but at 720x480 running the file on my computer it doesn't look distorted or anything.
Next, I'm interested in creating files with two audio tracks and two subtitle options (on or off). Would my best bet be to use OGM? And, when I use autoGK are the audio and subtitles demuxed by default? Because the other guide I'm reading says I need to mux them when I create the OGM file.
Finally, autoGK did a pretty poor job of encoding my 5.1 AAC audio stream into a stereo MP3 (VBR 128 kbps). It just sounded muffled. Is this a known limitation, and am I better off leaving the AC3 audio untouched and encoding it separately as an MP3 with another program?
TIA.

I should also add, even though I don't know if it matters, I have a program installed called AVS Media Converter. It converts AVI, MPG, DVD, all back and forth. It's a nice little app, but it only chooses the default audio stream on a DVD, and I contacted their support about this, and if I can get it to produce dual-audio files, and I haven't gotten an answer from their support staff - been a week now, asked twice :(.
I say this because I don't know if the program installs any "funny" codecs or incompatible versions of XviD that would make AutoGK misbehave.

Hello, and welcome to the forum-
Do you have an AutoGK log file to support what you're saying? I know for sure that you'll never get a "538 x something" resolution out of AutoGK. Maybe that was a typo or something. Perhaps open the AVI in GSpot (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/gspot221.exe) to see what you can learn.
...why is my max allowable resolution 640 and not 720?
It isn't. Do you have an up-to-date AutoGK?

BTW I read a FAQ that said that your DVD player "shrinks" the resolution before displaying it on a TV, but at 720x480 running the file on my computer it doesn't look distorted or anything.
That's because it's been resized, depending on whether the DAR is 4:3 or 16:9. If you were to open the VOB in something that doesn't resize it, such as VDubMod, or DVD2AVI (DGIndex), you'll see the distortion. Read this:
http://www.doom9.org/aspectratios.htm
You can get 2 audio tracks and 2 subtitle tracks (external ones) with AutoGK. It's not automatically done. You have to tell it to do so.
Is this a known limitation
Did you mean to say AAC? Did you mean AC3? It shouldn't sound muffled. Maybe you chose a low bitrate. Again, post the log.

Okay sorry the resolution it is outputting is 512x384. When I first tried GK, I let it choose the resolution automatically, and that's what it gave me. But I wanted a bigger picture so I tried to manually set it, two different times, to "fixed width = 640" and "maximum width". Both times it gave me an ouput file of the same resolution, 512x384.
My AutoGK is version 1.60 and my XviD codec is version 1.0.3.
I chose external subtitles but didn't see an option for demuxed audio, but I see that DVD Decrypter can demux so I will look into that option. I guess right now my biggest problem is the resolution.

Hi-
AutoGK is up to ver 1.85, so I'd definitely recommend upgrading. It may also solve the resolution problem, which shouldn't happen if you set it up correctly. However, I see no sign that you told it to use 640x480. But again, perhaps the newer version will solve it for you. I'm not sure that I'd recommend using such a high resolution for a 175MB file size. Perhaps go for 3 episodes per CD at that resolution (233MB each). The quality is kind of iffy already at 512x384 (59.74%).
It looks as if you got both the English and Japanese audio tracks. And you didn't set it up correctly to get 2 subtitle languages. But the newer version should solve that for you also:
1.85 beta
- removed high quality switch for lame mp3 encoding to get joint stereo output from BeSweet
- total duration of a job is displayed in the logs
- fixed minor GUI bugs in audio/subs selection
- autocrop.dll updated to version 1.2
- added additional parameters to control autocrop (see hidden_options.txt), so manual cropping can now be performed
- speed (fps) of comp test is displayed properly
- second audio/subs is now visible by default (no need to press CTRL-F10)
