Hello all. First off thanks so much for all your help in the past, everyone here is very helpful. I have 3 quick questions.
1) I have the choice between the NEC 3500a and 3520a, which is the superior drive?
2) With DVD Decrypter 3.5.2.0, the 3500a only rips at around 2.0x. I believe flashing to a new firmware would fix this problem. Does the 3520a also have this rip lock?
3) Assuming both have the rip lock problem, what firmware version do you recommend for question #1's drive pick?
Thanks all.

1) the nd-3520a.
ND-3520A is the first model on the market that can write on both DVD-R(DL*) and DVD+R(DL*) with dual layers, which was previously only possible in the DVD+R9 format. The ND-3520A also enables rewritable RW discs to be burned with the highest speed so far on the market - 8x for DVD+RW and 6x for DVD-RW respectively.
In addition to normal 16x burning in both DVD-R and DVD+R standard, the ND-3520A burns dual layers on DVD+R9 and DVD-R DL discs. The speed of writing with dual layers is 4x.
2) & 3) yes both have riplocks. http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/ has the modified firmwares for the both drives.
personally i don't recommend using hacked firmwares.

The NEC drives rip faster than 2x, more like 4 - 5x.
If you're only getting 2x on yours (when you get it), it's probably because DMA isnt enabled / working on your pc.

Thanks guys for the info. I should have been more clear about the rip speed I’m getting. I just ripped my T2 DVD last night, and it took exactly 30 minutes, at around 3-4x. I'm set with DMA2. I have ripped at twice this speed before with my old Sony DVD (read-only) drive.
Can either of these NEC drives get up to that speed with the rip lock removed? Quality of the rip and burn are important to me, so I’m not concerned with speeding up the burning process, just the ripping speed. Would I lose quality by using a modified firmware? Thanks.

I've not really used my NEC 3500 for ripping, I have a DVDROM for that. I seem to remember getting about 10x on my 2500 when I had it in my machine - using herrie's hacked firmware.
All I do know is that I often reach 15.8x - 15.9x with the 3500 when doing a 'verify' having just burnt a disc.
