I know that bbMPEG can multiplex, but is there another freeware multiplexing tool which can multiplex an m2v and an ac3 stream into an MPEG2 program stream?

I'm pretty sure AVIDemux will Mux & Encode to Mpeg2.

i think mplayer/mencoder can do it.
muxman will give you a DVD compliant VOB, which i believe can be renamed to .mpg (though i can't guarantee it'll work properly if you do that).

Thanks for the replies. I had a look at AVIDemux, but can't find the multiplexing option.
What I'm looking for is a simple freeware tool, a bit like TMPGEnc's MPEG Tools, which runs on windoze, and which will multiplex an audio and video stream into an mpg program stream (not into a VOB).
Is there such a thing?

try mplex from mpegtools

Thanks for the suggestion, but that only seems to multiplex MPEG-1 streams, and seems to be for the BeOS operating system.

I've been after such a tool for quite a while!
Given that MuxMan can mux Mpeg2 (.m2v) and AC3 streams into DVD compliant VOB files, I wonder whether mpucoder (it's creator), could create such a tool?
Cheers

Mplex can handle mpeg1/mpeg2 as well as a host of different audio formats. It is a multi-platform utility, from mjpegtools. The BeOS version you found is an older build. Presently, I don't know of an official download location, but you can use the build that is pacakged with DVDAuthorGUI (http://www.videohelp.com/~liquid217/dvdauthorgui.pl?p=download) (look in the bin folder).
If you are needing something with a graphical frontend, there is also BBmpeg (http://www.videohelp.com/bbmpegedit.htm)

Peter Cheat made a modified version of MPlex which I often find useful:

I have a GUI version of Mplex but it doesn't seem to support .ac3. Does the Non-GUI version support .ac3?

The regular version of mplex supports ac3
Mplex is part of the mjpegtools (http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/)

Thanks for the suggestions. But I was really after a simple (and simple to use) utility with a GUI. I just don't find command-line programs very simple to use.

There is a little application named ImagoMPEG-muxer that I use. I can't remember where I downloaded it from. I did a quick google search and found no download sources. I decided to put it on a free hosting site so I could share it with you. Here is the link ImagoMPEG-Muxer (http://home.ripway.com/2005-1/233846/ImagoMPEG-Muxer.exe)
According to the site I have hosting the file there is download limit of 10mb per 24hrs, so if you have any trouble downloading just try again later. The file is only 204Kb which according to my limited mathmatical skills computes to ~50 downloads a day. I have never used this host so I don't know how long it will last.
Let me know if you have any problems.
(Edit): I remembered where I downloaded ImagoMPEG-muxer from. I got it from Videohelp.com (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=ImagoMPG-Muxer), but it seems their download link is down, so I will leave up my link.

Many thanks Macanudo,
This tool seems to work a treat. And has a simple and straight forward GUI: -

Very nice!
EDIT: Dear Mr Moderator. Why is it I can never get images to appear in my posts in this section of the forum?
Cheers

Thanks Macanudo - that's exactly what I was looking for.
Simple interface and easy to use. Along with Daniel Ache's AC3 Delay (when needed) it works perfectly.

To save some size, you can try 7zip.
Or best, you can try
http://northfox.uw.hu/down/mew11.zip
This is a exe packer based on 7zip algorithm.
Better compression than UPX.

I don't remember where I found it. It it's like bbmpeg+frameoverlap function like in DVD2SVCD.

Download MPEG Multiplexer 1.0 (http://www.brckomania.net/AUTOQ/files/mplex.rar)

Extending this particular discussion, do any of the programs mentioned have DirectShow based MPEG-2 multiplexers?
(And if not, are there any freeware DirectShow MPEG-2 multiplexers out there?)

The regular version of mplex supports ac3
Mplex is part of the mjpegtools (http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/)
Went there and it seems to be Linux only... any suggestions for an "official" XP download ?
Edit: Yes here http://freenet-homepage.de/CharlesWeb/download.html also related info at http://forum.videohelp.com/topic339284.html#1767759
... the user comment http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ImagoMPEG-Muxer#usercomments says
"I tried the latest mplex 2.2.4 of the mjpegtools 1.8.0 package and it now works like a charm. There are no timecode errors in Virtualdub anymore and audio stays in sync now."
I was looking for at least 1.8.0 and the dvdauthorgui web page said it was at 1.6 or thereabouts (I note 1.9 beta is out too), so I'll try the 1.8 links.
http://freenet-homepage.de/CharlesWeb/download/mjpegtools_180_A64_Win32.7z is for the AMD athlon64 version for 32-bit XP. Now, off to find Cygwin dll ver v1.5.24-2, 02/2007
Hmm, http://www.cygwin.com/ only lets you download the setup.exe which also installs associated applications too and not just download the DLL ... then again http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/cygwin/release/cygwin/ lets you download the tar and you can use 7zip to find and extract the DLL from that I guess into the same folder as mplex ?

Thanks for the above links, halsboss :thanks:
I also would appreciate an Mjpegtools 1.9 beta windows compile if anyone could give a link?

No worries mate. In http://forum.videohelp.com/topic339284.html#1767844 liquid217 (who looks like the author of dvdauthorgui) says
It may be my imagination, but it seems that a native mplex win32 build seems to run much faster than when compiled with cygwin. If I have a chance this week, I will see if I can compile the latest repository.

Thanks for the replies. I had a look at AVIDemux, but can't find the multiplexing option.
There is no explicit "multiplex" option. Though I think it should work this way:
1. Open the video stream via File -> Open
2. Add the Audio Track via Audio -> Main Track2.1. Set "Audio source" to "External MP3/MP2" or "External "AC3"
2.2 "Browse..." for the audio file3. Set both, "Audio" and "Video", to "Copy" (left side menu in the main Window)
4. Set "Format" to "MPEG-PS" or "MPEG-TS" (as you need it)
5. Hit File -> Save ...

Please help me !
I've similar problem. I tried TMPGEnc and Womble, but they get me bigger file size (+600MB instead of 411M) xD
EDIT: Ok, i can import them as video/audio tracks in Womble, and it gives me 418MB which is good, but i can't use seek in powerdvd xD
EDIT2: Wow! Womble works with MPEG2 TS (*.mpg)
Have fun !
