I need a codec supported by betaplayer (mpX, aac, wma, tons) capable of being encoded with virtualdub or graphedit at exteremely low bitrates.

I'm talking about mono sound under 8kbps.

I used MP3 for a time at 8kBits/sec 12000hz. Then, I switched to DivX ;-) audio at 5kBits/sec 8000hz.

Anything lower that works ok? I'd like to keep it above 4000hz, though.

Thanks for any input!

Does it support ogg vorbis? if so, try with oggenc -q -1 --resample 5000 --downmix input.wav

It'll be around 8kbps, but i'm not sure how good the sound quality is compared to mp3/divx audio (wma).

Also try Windows Media Audio 9 Voice at 4 kbps, 5 kbps and 8 kbps. You will need Windows Media Encoder 9.

I was copying the transmission of the police frequency, and I found that low quality WMA files work great(as McoreD suggested). I used to put a month and a half worth of transmissions(with timestamps) on 1 cd.
