View Full Version : Raging Bull ... Rip out FS or WS and keep menu

I'm trying to backup Raging Bull (R1) but I'm having a problem I have had with a few other movies as well. I did refer to 2Cool's guides (as always) but didn't notice any with a similar issue. (I admit, I didn't read *every* guide but I did go through quite a few)If I can get a point in the right direction on this one, maybe it will help me figure out the others also. :)
All I wanted to do was keep the menu intact and rip out one of the aspect ratios. When I rip out the FS or WS version, playing the movie just results in the MGM logo playing - when it's done, it goes back to the menu. I followed the same procedure for Rain Man (the DVD structure seemed extremely similar, both are MGM and have identical visual layouts, etc) as I did for Raging Bull and Rain Man works perfectly.
I also noticed that if I do manage to get the movie to play, for instance by changing the First Play PGC to movie instead of menu, the movie time says roughly 296 hours (one heck of a long movie!) and the time increments in 2 second blocks.
If someone has had a simlar issue with this movie (or even any other), can you please give me a point in the right direction as to correct it? Even better if you can give me the techincal explanation as well so I can sort this myself on future DVDs. Thanks in advance. :)

Try using jeanl's guide (http://jean.laroche.free.fr/Jumping0.4.3.1/index.html) and vobblanker (or pgcedit if the unwanted version is in its own VTS) to get rid of the unwanted AR version.

Which guide you're using?
Normally, keeping only one aspect ratio should be completely straightforward with PgcEdit, or vobblanker, or even titlesetblanker, because each aspect ratio HAS to reside in a different titleset according to the DVD spec:
The whole procedure should only require identifying which titleset has the aspect ratio you don't want and blanking it with titlesetblanker, or PgcEdit (blank all PGCs in domain), or vobblanker.
Maybe you're using one of 2COOL's older guides (written when such cool tools as the above didn't exist). Things are much much easier now.
If I were you, I would try again using for example PgcEdit:
- Load the DVD
- Identify the titleset with the aspect ratio you don't want (use the preview, or the domain stream attributes)
- Blank the whole titleset (Utilities/Blank out all PGCs in domain).
- Save and test.

actually, my guide wouldn't be useful as it shows you how to blank specific PGCs without reclaiming the space. You definitely want to reclaim the space on the DVD in your case!

EDIT: The guide you mention is only to jump to the menu or the movie, maybe you meant my other guide (http://jean.laroche.free.fr/SkippingStuff0.4.3.1/index.html)

@jean
But it would get him past his stoppage at the MGM logo. And in conjunction with VobBlanker/PGCEdit should solve his space problems.

I'm referring to the main menu as the one I want to keep.
The aspect ratio menu is what normally shows on First Play. Using your guides I easily managed on Rain Man. I blanked the FS version using BlankVOB and changed the First Play in IFOedit. First Play goes to the main menu (instead of the aspect ratio menu) and then the movie plays fine using the 'Play' button on the menu.
It seemed strange that it didn't work the same way for Raging Bull. :(
I'll give jeanl's guide a go tomorrow. Any additional tips are welcome also. :)

This should help you out with the aspect ratio menu in Raging Bull.

OK, it appears you're running into a well known problem: in most DVD (but not all) you can't jump directly to the main menu because if you do that, you're probably missing a number of register setting commands. When you get to the menu, the registers hold the "wrong" values, and play back does not work as it normally should. You have two solutions:
- Use 2COOL's guide to bypass the aspect-ratio menu and go on playing the DVD normally.
- Use my guide to jump directly to the menu (bypassing everything in the middle).
Both should work identically well. I don't know why it worked with rain main, chances are the authoring is slightly different...

OK, so I referred to jeanl's guide for PgcEdit (app looks a bit daunting but I figured I should just dive right in) and it seems I have been successful.
I blanked the VTS I didn't want using Blank VOB and used PgcEdit's 'Trace Mode' to get the values for the aspect ratio menu button. Then I changed the First Play PGC command to display the regular menu instead of the aspect ratio menu on 1st play. Finally, I added a pre-command above that one with the value obtained from the button on the aspect ratio menu. I tested every which way and times now display properly, DVD plays as it should in PowerDVD, etc. All that remains is to burn it and see if the DVD player is satisfied.
Anything I missed?
Thanks again. :)

Did you test to see if your Aspect Ratio menu displays when you initially select a chapter?
