i wonder if it is possible to edit or change highlighting used with buttons in dvd menu. Is there any suitable application to do that or is it even possible?

You could try numenu to reauthor your menu in scenarist. You'll have total flexibility to change things that way.
I don't know if either menuedit or dvdremake is capable of changing such things.

What EXACTLY do you want to accomplish? Are you wanting to change the highlight colours, or remove some buttons??
Flu is correct in suggesting NuMenu4u. It will recreate the menu in its original entirety (with or w/out re-encoding)

well, what i need is to change highlighting
for example i have some buttons for choosing subtitles and if you move mouse over it or navigate through remote control to it, then it change its image somehow - change color, underline it or something. i can change button image but original highlight is still there not suitable for my new button. so is there any way to change that highlighting of any button?

I really do not know if it's possible to edit highlight colors in ifoedit. Since it are subs I should think it is. You might want to visit the corresponding forum for that.
There are commercial programs that let you do what you want pretty easily I believe.

You should see them as subs, with vobedit (check buttons) you can find a lot of info on them. If you want to edit them, then you will need a authorings program to re-make the menu that you want to edit. You can mux it back in to the original structure. The problem is that you can't (jet) simple remux the sub in to the vob. I bet derrow knows how to do it, it should be the same way he remuxes the m2v in a vob. So it's a bit hard but do-able

Dvd-Rb writes the subs directly back into the navpacks so it is possible for sure.
I would go with numenu. It will recreate your menu and you can change the highlights. There's just one big catch, you'll need scenarist.....

The highlight you see are actualy subs that normaly has 3 color states, not selected, selected, activated. With subrip you can get them from your menu.
