View Full Version : Changing Anime DVD subs

I'm in the process of trying to change the nasty yellow subtitles that come with an anime series I have on DVD. (doesn't have to burnt back to a DVD disc either)

Been reading up all day on the techniques posted on this forum about replaing and added your own sub onto a DVD.
Sadly it seems these guides are based on if the DVD you are using is based on a single Vob with easily accessable subs.

The trouble i'm having is that this DVD has been laid out rather a weird way.

The DVD has 4 episodes on it which are located in one large Vob (PGC 1 [01:35:16]) in VTS 04 (also an exact copy in PGC 3)
Inside the PGC is 17 chapters which sadly each contain small parts that make up each episode (boohoo)

It looks like the only way for me to complete this is to try and rip the whole sub from the whole vob which contains all 4 epiodes, unless ther is a way to split them into the 4 episodes.

If anyone can help me please would be most kind.
Also Happy New Year (to all thats it happened to or not yet)

Use chapterripping in dvd decrypter's IFO mode. Just select the chapters containing that 1 ep and rip it and repeat the procedure for all teh opther episodes. Then just loadthe separate ifo's u get for those in subrip to process that specific ep's subs.

Cheers for the help thats got it nicely.

Weird thing is I've ripped the first episode via that method;

Left with:
VTS_04_0.ifo
VTS_04_01.vob

But when I play this in say PowerDVD there is no option to display the subs at all.

Dunno if this is down to the the orginal layout, im just at a loss with this release.

It's been going well, decided to make MKV's of the episodes with dual Jap audio and subs.
The first episode has been finished but I'm now having trouble with the next one.

As from my first post:

All 4 episodes are located in multiple chapters in one VTS/PGC
With the help from Dreassica, I've managed to rip all the 4 episodes so there are seperate Vobs & IFO's.

The problem has arisen with the cub rippng of the second episode.
When opened in Subrip to convert to OCR format, the time starts at 23:29 to 48:13 (probably due to it being contained in one VTS).
The subs can be converted fine, but when muxed with video they won't show as they only start after 24mins and 39secs.

Is there are way to move all the time codes of the subs back to 00:00, or do I have to rip the DVD another way to remove the time difference?

Thanx for any help given.
(If any screenies of the info is needed then please ask)

Do you just want to change the colour from yellow to sth. else or do you also want to replace the original subs ? This is maybe a silly question, but you could simply edit the pertinent ifo files if you only want to change the colour.

Mainly I would like to just change the font/size/colour of the DVD type, but upon trying I couldn't get it to work.

I've managed to get the timing problem fixed but no have problems with the subs decrypting 2 seperate lines of text on scenes (say one at the top and one at the bottom, Subrip puts both lines at the bottom)

If there is a better way to just alter the subs and put back into VOB then that would help even more (save me encoding then)

Cheers

as smiller667 posted, perhaps just change the ifo files?

TO my understanding the subs are stored as simple (colorless?) picture data - the ifo files contain the color info the player uses to display them. So,,, if all you want to do is change the color...

Think i've got it all sorted now.
Need to change the font, size and colour.

Gonna OCR convert them (sorting all corrections out) and also rip the as BMP's so I can see which dialogue lines need to be split (one top and bottom) thus only a few corrections need to be made then.
