View Full Version : Synching for the Truly Anal

First off, does anyone know why SubRip and VobSub give different time codes, when both are ripping from the same VOBs? The difference can sometimes be as much as 10 - 12 frames (about half-a-sec).

Usually, a half-second difference is hardly noticeable, especially with speech or dialogue. However, I do a lot a Animes, and subs are not used just for dialogue, but for signs, Japanese titles, video notes (Excel Saga/Abenobashi), Jiggle Counters (Burn-Up) etc etc. (A Jiggle Counter is a sub that counts how many times a female character's chest bounces around, and since these bounces can occur very rapidly, synching to the exact frame is critical).

So far, I've been doing the synching manually, and I find that both SubRip and VobSub are off most of the time (not by much - 2 to 10 frames usually). The only 100% exact method is to demux the subtitles with VobEdit into .SUP format, and remux back using IfoEdit, then replace the reauthored VOB with the newly remuxed one, using IfoUpdate. Rather convoluted, messy, but it works every time. Everytime, EXCEPT when IfoEdit/IfoUpdate can't handle certain situations (multi-angle, for example).

Know what would be great? If someone could come up with a subs ripper that can rip directly to .STL format - the only format that allows all sorts of cool stuffs like subs fade, karaoke wipes, etc).

Any takers?
