Cleaning up codecs?

I'm afraid the my present bunch of installed codec's aren't doing the job very well. Is there some guides or programs which will help me clean up my mess of dll's?
(tried codec_sniper but it gave me an error - when running it - and I coundn't use it).

I added a link to the xvid faq to a program called "bigfix.exe" which does what you want some months ago.
