ok, what im trying to do is convert a certain file type to ANYTHING other than what it is. why? well because i want to convert it to a DVD standard, but its japanese and i cant get the subtitles to stick when i convert it.

the story begins, i have this video that i had to find an AC3 dmv audio codec, found one at http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/AC3ACM/index.html without that virtualdub would just say error 2000 or something... then i had to download some kind of windowsmedia 9 codec for wmv3 video decoding.

so now i have both of those, so now it can encode the video in virtualdub to any format i want (ie divx or whatever).
i would like to say that i use windows mediaplayer clasic, and i was able to play the video just fine before those codecs were installed :) also the subtitles showed up (i already had vobsub installed :D) however just to mention it again, virtualdub wouldnt do any playback unless i had the above codecs installed.

and im going to restate now that i can encode the video in virtualdub. however it doesnt conver the subtitles, i am a subtitles noob.

its an AVI file with subtitles and i need the subtitles cause im trying to make it in dvd format, so i need someones help to tell me what to do. i have tried so many applications so far its not even funny, i think mabe i dont know how to use them? or mabe im not using the right ones, most of the ones out their convert DVD subs into a subtitle file, well i dont have a subtitle file, their in the AVI file, and it seems like its not hardcoded into the video because when i use virtualdub to convert it, it doesnt include the subtitles :(

so please someone make sence of this and help me step by step :p /me = noob to subtitles (ohh and scripts too).

here is more info if u need.
aviCODEC:
File : 380 MB (380 MB), duration: 0:31:39, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 70 %
Video : 279 MB, 1233 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 640*480 (4:3), WMV3 = Windows Media Video 9, Supported
Audio : 101 MB, 448 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 5 channels, 0x2000 = AC-3 ACM Decompressor, Supported

their was something called AVIsubDetector, but i have no idea how to use it, i open it and somehow get a file in the list, then just start pressing buttons and nothing is happening, nothing at all, so i dunno, mabe im not suppose to use that, but its not working for me unless someone has a step by step way to use it :(
i also searched these forums with no avail, mabe i used the wrong words to search :(

Pal, I should be a mind reader in order to help U out.
Anyway, converting avi to DVD is a bad idea normally and this forum is about subs not conversions.

well mabe i didnt explain enough... i can convert the video fine, i cannot convert the subtitles at all.

that is esentially what i want to do. convert the video that i have which is an AVI with subtitles to a differnt format (divx for all i care) and retain the subtitles to the new encode.

then the subs are not hard burnt in and u must convert the file having the subs

thats what i cant figure out.

i know their not burnt in, but how do i get those subs to its own file to use for the new encode? is their such a way?

i dont have the actuall file with all the subtitles in it, nor do i see any files extracted when vobsub plays the video, where are the subtitles kept when its playing the video? if their not burnt in. is their a temp folder?

etc etc etc, is their any way to do this at all?

Do not try to get the subs out of your avi because
avi can not contain subs afaik.

Do you have the subtitles in a txt/srt format that matches the avi ?
If yes then convert the srt to sup and remux the strems with your new sups.

Good luck

its a movie thats already been encoded, it has subs already included in it. i have no seperate files, its just one avi file. it seems like vobsub extracts the subs from the file or something, cause i know their not burned in it. they just show up when i play the movie, but when i encode the movie to something else, it just doesnt include them, so i need a way to encode to annother format and include the subtitles.

but i dont have any sub's in any form or txt file etc.
