I tried to convert quicktime MOV file into AVI using Nero recode, but the resulting format is mp4. The quality seems to be the best I have ever tried, though I dont like the mp4 format. Is there any other way to have AVI format at last?

NO!!!
And it will never be.In fact this is a very good thing...
You have two options:
1) Don't use Nero Recode and learn to like mp4.
2) If you don't like mp4 wait until mkvtoolnix will support AVC muxing completely and remux from mp4 to mkv.

recode doesnt output to .avi but to .mp4 (the official mpeg-4 container format)
moved to container forum as its not a codec issue

Hi momentum,
Did you use Recode2 to generate Mpeg4 SP/ASP or Mpeg4/AVC (aka: h.264) files?
If it was Mpeg4 SP/ASP. With the right tools it's perfectly possible to extract the audio and video streams to .AVI
Not that I'm in favour of doing such a thing either. As bond says... .MP4 is "the official container format for mpeg-4"!

Is there similar tool that will demux the audio and video from an actual avi file the way mp4ui does for mp4? I use virtualdub normally but I love the way MP4UI does it. I searched for a tool to do this but have yet to find one.
p.s. sorry for hijacking the thread.

Have you tried remuxing the mov directly with Graphedit? (faster, no quality loss)

Hmm... Do you think there ever will be an "MP4ui" sort of thing that works with AVC? Or will it be, as many a proffessional oft declare "Alas! it was not meant to be, and it never shall!" ?
MP4 mux, AVI mux, no MP4-AVC mux... sigh. At least not in this version of Nero, muhuha.

mp4ui is based on mpeg4ip, and mpeg4ip already handles avc-in-mp4. the mp4ui dev only needs to update his tool

Ah, but MPEG4ip hardly supports Windows anymore... jeez, what do the project ppl think the world runs on? Linux? You see, it's extremely hard to port nowdayz 'cuz it doesn't support windows as much and needs to be partially rewritten in order to do so (I've heard...)
