View Full Version : Choppy Skipping Video - Max Bit Rate Too High??
BackwoodsYahoo
24th December 2004, 21:12
Well I've successfully created several DVD backups for the first time using the Big 3 method.
I've run in to this problem in the past with DVD2SVCD - A.K.A. DVD2DVD, and discovered that my choppy, skipping video problem was that the Max bit rate was too high. I'm now experiencing the same problem with the DVD backups I've made using the Big 3 method. Is there any way I can reduce the Max Bit rate in the Big 3 method. Does any one have any sugestions as to what I can do to fix this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm using ImgTool Classic(latest) in asociation with DVD Decrypter (latest) to burn to DVD.
Thanks

Ok, so I guess if there's no way of adjusting the Max bit rate, then I guess only one audio source is supported. Two audio sources, 5.1 Dolby & DTS is too much. Oh well....
Thanks

of course you cn adjust the max bitrate (although I doubt that this is the cause of the problem). Dif4u produces a file called ccedata.txt. In that file all variables are stored that are used to encode (including max bitrate). You can manually adjust the max bitrate if you want to.
Two audio sources, 5.1 Dolby & DTS is too much. Oh well....
This is really complete nonsense.

This is really complete nonsense. agreed. i have often kept more than 4 or 5 audio streams in a back-up. i would believe that the cause is a more a result of the encoding settings used. could you please post further information in regards to the settings used to encode the problematic video and what exactly you are experiencing/seeing.
cheers

BackwoodsYahoo what region you in (PAL/NTSC)
what version of CCE are you using to encode?
what movie are you currently working on...
what version of avisynth are you using?
choppy video is usually a sign that either something's incorrect happened somewhere along the line
things to do (in order) to help us isolate the problem for you:
1) get us the answer the questions listed above)
2) Open the .AVS file of one of the assets in question in mediaplayer. If video is choppy, the problem is something with avisynth (more specifically something in the script)
3) If not choppy above, open the re-encoded asset in powerdvd/windvd/your prefered mpeg2 player (you may need to rename the .mpv file to .m2v for these to play it) - if video is choppy, then the problem is a encode issue....
4) If not choppy above, the problem is most likely either an author error or an ifo update error - the prior is more unlikely then the later

Ok guys, I understand, you require more info. I will gather all info and post it here for your review. Being Christmas today, my time on the PC is limited. I will have more time to get you the required info tomorrow on boxing day. Please hang tight, the info's comming.

merry xmas..
regaurding the issue, yes.. more info.. including the media you are using and the dvd player you play backwith. before you say 'ive used this media before with no problems (once i lowered the bitrate ;) )' you may consider lowering the bitrate may just be masking issues (the lower bitrate may allow the player to compensate for delays in reading back the data) .. scenarists mux engine is pretty strict and it will fail rather than produce a non-compliant stream.

you may want to consider different media (read better).. especially since youve had to lower bitrate with other backup methods as well.. of course less expensive option is manually editing the bitrates in batchccews before encoding...
automatic lowering of max bitrate isnt currently an option since the max bitrate should never have to be lowered.

Problem with Play Back: Video is choppy, freezes and jumps to different intervals in the movie, (looks sort of digital square chunks.) Video and audio seem to freeze then resume a few seconds later at a different time interval in the movie (a few seconds to a minute). In my opinion, this is media related. Bitrate will never be an issue, as Trahald correctly stated: Scenarist is very finicky about DVD Spec, and it will never allow the max bitrate to exceed DVD specifications, therefore as long as your settop can perform well with a DVD made to spec, it should be able to play anything made from Scenarist. Contrastly, SVCD is a format with a max bitrate limit of up to 2600kbit/s video and 224kbit/s audio-- well below the DVD standards, so it is easily possible to create video exceeding the limit.
Choppy, blocky, skipping... usually media related. Try burning at 1x. Try different media like Ritek, TDK, Verbatim (I suggest also burning at 1x for maximum life expectancy). Try DVD-R as well as DVD+R (My settops perform much better with DVD-R, though a couple can handle DVD+R). Cheaper media can usually get away with burning at 1x, though the media will rot and usually become unplayable after several months or a year. The faster you burn, the hotter the laser has to get, and cheaper dye 'breaks down' at these temperatures, resulting in the well-known symptom of 'laser-rot'. Even if it's not noticeable at first, over time the rot worsens, and at some point it becomes bad enough that settops can no longer read the data.
This is really complete nonsense.
Thanks for the helpful comment Influenza.

I appreciate any help, with out sarcastic comments. This wasn't sarcastic. Sarcastic is saying something other than what someone means in a way that the person receiving it can tell it was meant in an opposite fashion (ie. "Oh yeah you'll definitely win 1st prize in the pageant with that ugly blue and orange ensemble."). Flu was just pointing out what we all saw also: That the statement had no bearing on the problem or solution, and that trying to apply SVCD 'rules' to the world of DVD is iffy at best, and probably not a good idea. ;)

and that trying to apply SVCD 'rules' to the world of DVD is iffy at best, and probably not a good idea.
I was not trying to apply SVCD rules to the world of DVD. SVCD2DVD is merely the NAME of the program. That is why I put beside it, A.K.A. - DVD2DVD. With in the program SVCD2DVD it is possible to slect DVD2DVD, SVCD, VCD, AVI and so on. So how or why you people ever thought I was applying the rules of SVCD to the world of DVD is beyond me. I was merely using my experience in backing up DVD2DVD movie only, with the program SVCD2DVD, which also has a place here at the doom9 forum.
Thanks for your help people. I'll keep experimenting with this problem. I'm sure I'll figure it out, in time.
Thanks

This wasn't sarcastic
Absolutely not. It was just a statement meant to say the above mentioned was false. And I tried to do that in a very clear way ;). I don't want anyone to stumble onto this thread led to believe more than one audio track is not possible.
I think most causes for your choppy video are mentioned above. If I should make a top 3 of my personal ideas:
1) Bad media
2) STandalone not able to handle (certain kind of) media very well (try it on an other one)
3) wrongfully encoded video files (if you used correct settings for NTSC this shouldn't be a problem).

3) wrongfully encoded video files (if you used correct settings for NTSC this shouldn't be a problem).Speaking as a primarily-NTSC user, I don't believe #3 is a possibility if Scenarist muxed it, and he can in fact play the video and it looks correct when on his PC.
So how or why you people ever thought I was applying the rules of SVCD to the world of DVD is beyond me. Well, I've never heard of higher bitrates causing problems with DVD, only SVCD. So I wrongly read your statement and obviously misread it. My apologies.
Good luck! I'm sure one of our latter suggestions will shed better light on this problem!

If it's a fieldorder problem (only possible with interlaced video encoded as interlaced). The choppy/shaky playback won't show on the PC monitor only on TV.
