I am using DVD Decryptor v3.5.1.0 and am having aspect ratio problems after ripping. If I play the original DVD with PowerDVD, under Configuration -> Information, it correctly states that the aspect ratio is 4:3. The video plays correctly in a letterboxed 4:3 format (i.e. NOT 16:9 widescreen). But after ripping, if I load the vob's into DVD2AVI (or dvd2avidg, or dgindex), the preview screen says it's 16:9 when it's so obviously not!!! Consequently, any transcoders like DVD-Shrink or encoders like DVD Rbuilder produce incorret aspect ratio output files. The movie comes out letterboxed 16:9, resulting in a very squished video.

I have tried both file and ISO ripping modes. Anyone know what's going on?

Ripping doesnt change this, so whatever the problem is, it's nothing to do with the ripper. All it's doing is removing the CSS protection.

If you look at the disc in IFO mode - stream processing tab, what aspect ratio does it display for the m2v (0xE0) stream?

That value will be what the IFO contains.

If you then right click on one of the main vobs (i.e. VTS_XX_1.VOB onwards where XX represents the largest group of vobs) and select 'Stream Processing', what does it say there for the aspect ratio? Thats what the VOB files themselves think the film is encoded as.

Yeah, I hopefully can explain what's happening in your case.

On a DVD there are two locations where the AR information is stored: The ifo-file corresponding to the titleset, and the sequence headers of the videostream ( which are contained in the vob-file ) itself.

Sometimes you will have DVDs where the AR indicated in the ifo-file is correct, but the videostream itself containes a wrong AR information.

If you play a DVD like that as a whole disk, PowerDVD will use the information contained in the ifo-file. But if you play the vob-file in file mode, PowerDVD can't know about the ifo-file and therefore will use the wrong information from the sequence headers.

It should be possible to correct the AR information in the vob-file using DVD-Patcher, which is available here:
