I've been using DVD Rebuilder and CCE to backup DVDs. I use IfoEdit/PGCEdit to trim out unwanted stuff.

I'm now trying to move this functionality to another computer. The problem is I've installed so many programs and did it long enough ago that I have no idea what I actually need or what decoder I'm currently using.

On the new PC, when I try a 'DVD Play' in IfoEdit it complains about not having a DVD Decoder. Zoom player on the new computer is not working either.

My question is: How do I tell what decoder I'm using on the old computer? Is it possible I'm using different ones for different apps?

Zoom player on the old computer lists tons of filters. I guess I don't know the difference between a filter and a decoder.

Some software on the working computer that I've installed that might include a decoder are: Elecard, PowerDVD, WinDVD and many other programs.

Could someone help a confused newbie?

I think PowerDVD is suposed to be the best with IFOedit, think i saw a post by 2Cool saying that.

Yes, powerDVD definitely includes a mpeg2 decoder. That might be all you need.

Crap. I dug out the old PowerDVD CD and tried to install it on the second computer, but my original system was a DELL.

The PowerDVD installation program says .... 'This program can only be installed on a PC from DELL.'

So, what should I try now? Is there a freeware decoder available via download?

Try WinDVD, I've heard that the Elecard one does not function properly with IfoEdit.

I still prefer PowerDVD codecs since it hasn't given me any problems. Here's a work around on what you can do. Download PowerDVD 5.0 or above trial (http://www.gocyberlink.com/multi/download/dl_file_new.jsp?ProdId=1) and install.

Go to C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD

You need to keep these folders, AudioFilter & VideoFilter

You obviously need to keep your PowerDVD folder since everything is under it. But you can delete the files out of the other folders to cut down on HD space. If you don't feel daring, just rename the other folders like Skins and NavFilter. Test in IfoEdit. If IfoEdit works as plan, you know what folders/files to delete. ;)

You may want to install current DirectX (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx) on your computer also.

Thanks guys.

I have WinDVD running at the moment. I'll try 2Cool's suggestion w/ PowerDVD if I run into problems.

I'm encoding my first movie on the 2nd computer now. What a time consuming hobby.

Thanks for the help, everyone! :D

jim7jim,
There is a GPL mpeg decoder directshow filter at sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gplmpgdec). I use it and it works fine. Just don't try to adjust settings while its playing.
