I wonder if it is feasible. Would help a lot in buying quality DVDs in the place where I live. :-)

They let you open up the DVD case (and crack the plastic) before you buy?
I'm sorry for the trollish connotation, but it reminds me of a post I saw way back when saying that there was a guy in a Blockbuster video *testing out* DVDs on a laptop when he was actually ripping them to his hard drive.

i'm all for better labelling...
i guess it's my own fault for not checking, but when i backed up my copy of dead leaves i was assured by the cover that it was DVD-5 (and it's a short movie, so why not?), but i ended up trying to burn 6.28 gigs on a 4.38 gig disc
surprisingly it plays back okay, but unsurprisingly on attempting to access the special features, the DVD player crashes hard.

Dual-Layer-DVDs will often look slightly different on their reflective side - often slightly golden or bronze-coloured, while single-layer ones will look silver in colour.
But that's really just a rule-of-thumb, you would really have to check with your dvd-rom to be sure.

in some country that sold PRT dvd, single or double layer disc had the same 'golden or bronze-coloured' and they label single-layer as dvd9, so the customer will think they get the dvd9(dual-layer,golden or bronze-coloured dye). i have original dvd from US, single-layer are in silver dye and dual-layer golden or bronze-coloured dye.

Apart from slighty different colour, I think DVD-9 have two barcodes in the inner circle near the hole. One for each layer. At least its that way with all my DVDs.

I think the original poster meant how you could see the diference between original dual-layer disc's and bootleged single layer discs, as he said it would help a lot in getting quality DVDs where he lives.

Well, if you can open the case, you just look at bottom side of the disk near the centre and check for the number of barcodes/serial number (they are stamped in): 1 barcode -> 1 Layer. 2 barcodes -> 2 Layer.
I don't know if bootlegged discs have that, but I think that the barcodes are used during manufacturing for quality control purposes. And the manufacturing devices used would be the same.
