I hope this is the right forum for my question. I have two .avi files that I’m having problems viewing. Very short files, no more than a minute each. The audio will play but not the video. My searching of this problem is leading me in circles, which I’m sure has more to do with my searching abilities than the actual information.

So please, tips and suggestions on what I need to do would be very appreciative.

have you tried gspot to find out which video codec is being used.
once you know that, use google to try to find the codec...

I just tried GSpot and this is what it says:

4CC: DivX
Name: DivX 4 (OpenDivX)

GSpot was unable to find a suitable codec installed, indicating that this media file not likely playable on this O/S at this time. To be able to play this media file, attempt to locate a suitable codec based on the Format and 4CC given above. Install the codec and then test again with GSpot after the codec has been installed.

So I should look up a codec for DivX?

Ok I did it. Since GSpot said that the file name was DivX 4 I figured I'd start with that so I went back to codecs on Doom9.org and I downloaded DivX 5.2.1 and it worked. Thank you for the help.
