"Chipmaker Conexant has released what it touts as the world's first range of AVC decoders.
The CX2418X is MPEG-4 part 10 (AVC)-compliant and offers increased recording capacity on PVR-enabled set-top boxes. The decoder--housed in a 268-pin chip array ball grid array--also increases the number of HDTV channels that broadcasters can transmit and enables live video content transmissions over the Internet.
"Our new H.264 compression [MPEG-4 part 10] decoder allows operators to significantly improve current compression rates and bandwidth utilization, enabling them to deliver more content using their existing infrastructure," said Jeff Crosby, vice president of broadband media processing products for Conexant.
Conexant recently acquired Amphion Semiconductor and the CX2418X--based on the ARM926EJ-S core--suite is the first set of products created as a result of the acquisition.
Samples are currently available and by Q2, 2005, volume production of the device is expected to be underway. "
