Almost every online store I've been to sells good Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim media in 50+ pack spindles, but in "Silver Thermal" or "Inkjet Printable" incarnations. What in the world does this mean? Are these types of discs better or worse than jewel case branded media?

Finally: should I get "Silver Thermal Lacquer" / "White Inkjet Printable " discs, or just get "Silver Shiny" regular unbranded ones?

I'd really like this answered, since I gotta buy some discs to burn ;)

i think they're all the same quality, just different uses:

Silver Thermal - a smooth gray top (i think)

Inkjet Printable - uses for cd/dvd printers or writing now, better than labels

Silver Shiny - wwoooooo it's so shiny, blind now

The T. Yuden are either shiny (mirror like) or ink jet printables, which have a some what matted finish. They do not make a matted disc.

I really like the ritek matted ones opposed to the shiny mirror finished, which tend to smudge a lot. Since Taiyo Yuden are the best, I was going to buy them but I want the matted look and do not want to pay $20 more for the printables. The best place to buy TYs are from Rima (most say) They are now carrying printables that go all the way to the hub.

I found this on techbargains today. You can get 4x dvd-r TY "shiny" ones for around $45 shipped.
