Hello,

I just wonder, if I install divx code only, can I still play xvid movies?

You can select "Support Generic Mpeg-4" from the "Quality Settings" tab of the decoder.
But be warned, some compatibility issues may occur.

Hi Bear,

Do you want to encode and decode. Or just decode?

If it's just decoding (ie: watching movies), then I would suggest you install XviD's decoder...

That said... I would suggest you install XviD codec anyway!

xvid and divx5 are both mpeg-4 compliant, therefore they can both play each other

charact3r is correct. My old computer didn't have the xvid codec but it played an xvid encoded movie.

im with smd on this the DIVX 5.2.1 decoder is not toally MPEG-4 ASP compliant and does strugle with 3 warp point GMC causing artefacts when decoding video from other Mpeg-4 codecs such as Xvid And Nero Digital.

However Xvid can decode Divxs Fine as one would expect.

the bottom line is if you want to install one codec for playing back all your Mpeg-4 avi's,ogm's ect then use either Xvid or FFdshow.

I would use Xvid as it can automatically resize anamorphicaly encoded videos to the corect DAR (only if the bitstream is packed mind).

The bottom line is that im not entirely sure what divx network have been doing over the last year as there codec has selmly improved at all. Whilst Xvid has become a clearly superior codec and now so has nero digital.

Version 5.2 released 2004-07-15

New:

* Localized versions for French, German and Japanese
* Bi-directional coding using an adaptive method
* Fully adaptive multiple consecutive B-frames
* MPEG-2/H.263 quantization choice
* Built-in bitrate calculator
* Update checking tool
* Automatic update notification for the DivX encoder
* Fast mode, revamped for better performance, compression and quality
* Feedback mode which is now multithreaded, taking advantage of HyperThreaded or dual CPU for better efficiency
* 3 point GMC support in the DivX decoder

Not that I use DivX for decoding XviD, but I knew I read about 3 warp point GMC support some place.

Also the latest FFDSHOW (http://ffdshow.sourceforge.net/ffdshow-20041129.exe) is able to handle DAR correctly (ensure you enable the Overlay option).

Well there we have it... DivX's DSdec filter can "finally" decode 3warp-point GMC :rolleyes:

Like many people here you still would not catch me using it, or recomending it though. I like a decoder that can read PAR/DAR signalling!
