greetings,

i'm trying to solve the slow seeking wmv files problem.. so i thought i'd convert them to mkv files.. which went fine, but now when i try to play them, media player tries to download wmaudio/wmvideo codecs, and says that they dont work.. any idea how to solve this?

thank you.

or actually, if it's possible, windows media audio/video in ogm would be just as good - though Thobias Ogg muxer didn't accept wmaudio stream in graphedit :( guliverkli mkv muxer does..

actually, i just noticed that WMP9 plays mkv file fine - it's just the WMP6.4 which wants to download something.. how come?

Thats strange indeed :O ....

Can you check what Graphedit is doing ? It could also be a good idea to google for wmv9vcm , the VCM codec version of WMV9, maybe it is necessary when playing WMV9 MKV files in WMP 6.4 ?

graphedit shows that the DMO (??) wmaudio/wmvideo decoders are being used.. what are these? perhaps that's why 6.4 chokes on them?=/ what does it use on your sys?

or perhaps i made the mkv file wrong way? i connected asf splitter to matroska muxer, and file writter.. is that correct? im out of ideas why 6.4 wont play it :(

thats correct and the DMO decoders should be the ones that are used... uhm... if you really despise WMP9 but would like to have a wmp6.4 like app try Media Player Classic :)

MPC works. but it's too full of features and takes 3 times as much time to load as WMP6.4.. so i have no idea why it wont work :( it's almost as if this is the case with wmvideo8 not working in avi files.. can anyone confirm that it works in mkv? :(

the file you send me doesnt work in WMP6.4, even after installing the codecs only the sound works.

Everything you watch is the correct behaviour. WMP 6.4 just can't play WMV9 (except WMV9 made with the VfW frontend in AVI). I think the problem is that it can't load the DMO's (Direct Media Objects) that are required and it seems M$ has no plans to update WMP 6.4.

Cheers,

I've never had a problem playing straight WM9 in wmp 6.4. WM9AP is the only one that doesn't work.

In fact, i remember also that WMP 6.4 could always play my WMV9 files fine, but this is probably because on all my Win2k installations i always installed WMP 7 also ? Maybe there is the right WMV9 decoder filter coming with the WMP 7 installer ?

no no, wmp6.4 plays direct wmv's just fine.. it just doesnt handle wmv8 in mkv.. wmv9 in mkv seems to work fine, and so does wmaudio DMO (so that doesnt really sound like wmp6.4 cant load DMO's :/)

Probably because V_MSWMV (http://www.matroska.org/technical/specs/codecid/index.html) isn't supported yet ._. it must just be using vfw mode, in which case, wmv9 will be the only one to work because it's the only one with a vfw decoder to hook up to. Try enabling WMV8 in ffdshow and it ought to work.

That shouldnt matter, files muxed in VFW compatibility mode (if that even is the case) can still use directshow filters/decoders... ffdshow is worth a try though...

ffdshow says that WMV8 support is not complete? and what *IS* the proper way to mux mkv's? or should I say, convert wmv to mkv?

you did it alright... dont worry about that.

So I was wrong, I guess. My apologies.

damn, i so hoped you'd be right :( so that again leaves me with no solutions on how to improve asf/wmv seeking.. it takes ages to seek! perhaps alternative asf splitter? or smth..
