View Full Version : Maximize resolution for anamorphic

Okay..here's another question. If I'm converting an Anamorphic DVD to maximize resolution in AutoGK, if I set the width to 720, would that not be 'downgrading' the potential resolution of the anamorphic dvd. That is, would that not lose the extra details that anamorphic provides and make the resultant encoding equivilent to a non-anamorphic dvd?
Should the width to set to something wider depending on the aspect ratio of the anamorphic title? Any thoughts?

Hi-
Anamorphic 16:9 DVDs stretch the video horizontally when resizing, based on the height (480 for NTSC, and 576 for PAL). So, a 16:9 NTSC DVD becomes 854x480 when resized by the player (480 x 16/9 = 853.333) 854 isn't such a good resolution to use, so you'd choose either 848 or 864. A 16:9 PAL DVD becomes 1024x576 when resized. If you want to take advantage of the full vertical resolution (even after cropping away any black above and below), choose those widths.

hm... IMHO loosing details is better than introduce the ones that are not there in the first place (when you stretch it). Anamorphic encode is ideal though...

skywalker101,
As len0x points out, an anamorphic encoding is ideal. So why not try encoding anamorphically with no resizing, just cropping out the black bars? In that way you would keep the original resolution.

coz AutoGK can't do that atm :)

Hi len0x, loni_blues, manono
Thanks for the resolution setting. Yup, as lenOx said, AutoGK doesn't (yet :) support anamorphic encoding so I think in order to keep the benefit of the added details in anamorphic dvd's, I'm going to follow manono's advice and use the resolutions he suggested. But here's the thing, though...manono, does the resolution you suggested apply to all aspect ratio's of films (1.85:1, 2.35:1, etc) or are the end widths dependant on actual aspect ratio of the film (sans black bars)?
The whole purpose of this madness is to transfer all the available details from anamorphic dvds! :o)

Yes. SeeMoreDigital has a nice set of Charts (http://82.2.167.237/03_Video_Only_Info/Pixel_Frame_Size_Totals.html) to help you figure it out.
