Alright, I'm sure I'll recieve alot of flak for posting such a simple question, but I need an answer. What is the best or easiest way to get a screenshot of an xvid (or for that matter any avi)?

Save frame function in VDub (you have to make an in and an out point of the frame you want to save)

or

when you're watching your movie on a player or in VDub, do Alt+Print then Ctrl+V in Paint(or other graphic software), save.

EDIT: welcome to the forum :)

Thanks, I probably should have specified that I'm not encoding. I want to take a screen shot of an already encoded xvid. Windows built in print screen takes it as being black, unless you turn off hardware acceleration but in that case there still is a fair amount of blurring going on. Media Player Classic has a screen shot function, but doesn't do full screen.

If you have it, you can open the xvid in VirtualDub, then make print-screen.
It works because video is rendered in a different way from DirectShow players...

Disable overlay rendering in your graphics driver, or tell MPC to use a rendering mode that does not use overlay. I've read that theres a performance hit for doing this, but I doubt its major.

My benchmark: (playing an average XviD at 720x480x24fps, on an Athlon 1.8GHz)
with overlays costs 18% cpu
without overlays costs 30% cpu
fullscreen without overlays costs 72% cpu
(I'm using MPlayer, not MPC, but the point should still stand)

Of course, if you're just doing it to take screen-shots and not to really watch a movie, it shouldn't matter.

ZoomPlayer

<ALT> F
-Captures screenshot as .BMP
-Works with anything that ZP can play (ie. if you have the filters installed, it can take a screencap
