View Full Version : should DVX be renamed to Dr. XviD?

I was thinking how to make DVX (which stands for DVB/DVD) more popular now that most work is completed and had the idea to use the name Dr. XviD opposed to Dr. DivX. Most people can't associate nothing with DVX and overlook it quickly, with Dr. XviD this possibly could change. I think a catchy name that has already fame can help a lot. Possibly both project could gain from it. I'm fed up with adware and any other software that puts limitations on me and I don't know if it's just me but my DivX trial expired only after a month or two and not after the promised six month so I'm not very excited about DivX at the moment. Happily there is a great open source alternative. I assume XviD is anyway the thing people mostly use with DVX so it would make completely sense.

I don't know how "cool" the folks at DivX are, but they could sue you for imitating their name too closely so that someone could mix that up easily. (Though "Dr. DivX" has to be copyrighted then of course, dunno if that's the case).
Isn't DVX more general? I mean, you could use just any codec with it?
You could get less users than hoped due to that "limitation" within the name.

likely they wouldn't be much happy, they've already ask me to change the name because they felt DVX is to close to DivX which is true but this is a coincidence. There might however be other interesting names that contain XviD and wouldn't collide with DivXNetworks.

it's general yes as it means DV(B|D) and yes, it's supports various encoders like RV10 and WMV by plugins. No doubt besides this there are a couple of other disadvantages using a name containing XviD like XviD might not always be that famous and it would involve some effort to change the name. Currently it's not very popular, I've noticed a lot people changing to DVD Shrink and the likes, even the second main contributor. The support forum used to have a lot more traffic. For that amount of users I rather reduce my work on maintenance as it has all features I need myself and work on my DVB application that need a serious fix anyway as it records corrupted timestamps which makes playback a hassle.

What is this, DOS? Do you NEED to use an acronym? What happened to giving projects REAL names?
I'd go with something like Digital Doctor or Video Pro or something similar which isn't already in use. :D
Personally, I'd remember a real project name much easier than some random group of letters.

since i think Dr.Divx is a stupid name i wouldnt reccomend Dr.Xvid either. i am sure you can come up with something better.

Then DivXNetworks will definitely start lawsuit. In that case "redocne DH-VMW" would be more advisable. :)
How about "x2x encoding tool" or maybe "x-to-x encoding tool". Short and easy to remember.
And if you switch "2" with one more "x" and add (everything you need for quality time encoding) then it will be the most discovered by searching systems encoding software ever! :D

thanks for the feedback, although I liked most of the suggestions I'm considering now XviD Producer, I hope nobody has a problem DVX being renamed to XviD Producer. It's a tough decision and seeing a poll XviD leaving every else codec in the dust (I'm expecting nothing else) would make that decision easier. Either such a poll doesn't exist, I'm slow or the search is flawed. I'm about to create a new poll.
