Here (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pio/pe/images/portal/cit_3424/154502711R8_8XMediaSpeeds.pdf) is the media compatibility list for the Pioneer DVR-A08XL.

Here (http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm) is a list of the best media sorted by reliability at DigitalFAQ.com.

Judging from these two lists, I've decided to go for Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-Rs, since they are among the highest recommended brands, even though the A08XL can only burn them at 12x. Is this the right choice? Would you recommend a better choice based on these lists?

Finally, the last question I'd really like an answer to is: Almost every online store I've been to sells good Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim media in 50+ pack spindles, but in "Silver Thermal" or "Inkjet Printable" incarnations. What in the world does this mean? Are these types of discs better or worse than jewel case branded media?

Thank you so much in advance for reading this and taking time to reply.

Cheaper than Taiyo Yuden 8x -R and of similar quality are for example Maxell 8x -R (MXL RG03)
