Hi All
Well i am pretty confused finding tools for H.264 AVC
Can Some one please help me out in understanding
Note:- I have Assumed AVC as a Container plz correct me if i am
wrong.
1.> I want to Convert Xvid/Divx/3ivx File in AVI to H.264 AVC
2.> Does H.264 Codec Compress more than 3ivx/Divx/Xvid maintaining
the Quality.
3.> Where and which version of H.264 Codec must be downloaded
and from where can it be used in VDub to Compress Files.
4.> Is AVC a Container for H.264 which Software to use for it.
5.> Is it possible to Rip DVD/SVCD/VCD Directly to H.264 AVC.
6.> Which Audio Codec goes with H.264 in AVC is it AAC for more
compression.
This are all things i am really confused about can someone help me
out Plzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Thanks in Advance.

1.> I want to Convert Xvid/Divx/3ivx File in AVI to H.264 AVC
AVC (advanced video coding) is no container, but an extension to the MPEG-4 standard, and thus another profile of the MPEG-4 standard like MPEG-4 ASP (the standard to which XviD conforms). MPEG4-AVC = H.264. I.e. AVC involves using codecs to recompress your video. You would loose quality if you recompress an XviD video to AVC, so there is no sense in doing that.
2.> Does H.264 Codec Compress more than 3ivx/Divx/Xvid maintaining
the Quality.
If both XviD and H.264 (ATM only Ateme's implementation is good enough to stand as a valid competition) are used to compress the same source video, H.264 will reach considerably lower bitrates while maintaining an acceptable quality. On the other hand, if your aim is high quality, H.264 does not yet reach transparency at lower bitrates than XviD. Put simply, if you want your encode to look every bit as good as the original, H.264 won't do that at a smaller filesize than XviD.
If you meant to recompress your XviD encodings to H.264 and hoped to keep the quality: Don't! Re-encoding is always a lossy process, and - see above.
3.> Where and which version of H.264 Codec must be downloaded
and from where can it be used in VDub to Compress Files.
ffdshow includes an H.264 implementation, you probably already have it installed. Seach the forum for handling. But as said, Ateme's H.264 codec which will come with a new Nero package, soon, is better ATM.
4.> Is AVC a Container for H.264 which Software to use for it.
The 'standard' container for AVC is MP4 (used by Recode). MKV should also be possible (depends on Mosu - I think he will provide for muxing H.264).
5.> Is it possible to Rip DVD/SVCD/VCD Directly to H.264 AVC.
I would be surprised if it wasn't possible with that upcoming Nero Recode.
6.> Which Audio Codec goes with H.264 in AVC is it AAC for more
compression.
HE AAC (Nero... ).
Hope this help ya,

Hey Teegedeck
Thanks a lot for the wealth of info that you provided me that was
really kind of you.

You mean to say H.264 codec is already there on my PC but its not shown in Vdub.
Can Ateme's H.264 codec be used with VDub.
Ne other Software than New Nero Recode For H.264/AVC Video + AAC Audio
Compression.

Teegedeck was faster than me. Only one thing remains to be added:
In the sticky first post of this thread there is quite a lot of information given on the subject MPEG-4 including AVC. There are some more available encoders mentioned there, and some backround information on what H264 alias MPEG-4 AVC is. It is always a good idea to start reading the sticky post whenever visiting a forum thread for the first time :)

I already read the sticky part before posting but H.264 AVC is a bit new to me i had some of my doubts which r not answered there so i asked it here its always good to ask and verify ur doubts before they remain as wrong things in ur mind.
Well if i had understood from the sticky section i wud not have asked
them here.
Thanks

Among the codecs shown in VDub's compression dialogue there should be something called 'ffdshow video codec'. Choose that, then select 'H.264' from the dropdown menue.
Edit: And no, you can't use Ateme's codec with VDub, it will be part of an all-in-one package, unfortunately. Yes, I recall there are other HE AAC implementations, but I'd have to search myself in order to tell you anything about them.

I'd recommend celtic_druid's builds (http://celticdruid.no-ip.com/xvid/ffdshow/) instead of the official downloads, they are more recent, plus the installer bug and the issues caused by wrong compiler settings are both fixed in them.

But the download speed is slower, i always get 2.4KB/s only(i'm using the ASDL, may be 1024KB/s):(

@Teegedeck:
H.264/AVC has noting to do wth a Profile from MPEG 4. A Profile is in MPEG Standards a "descriptionof the Power of the Decoder". AVC is a one Codec, wich is part of MPEG4. H.264 is the same, but the name of the ITU Standard, for Videoconferences.

Some builds of ffdshow will not show up if they are installed to a directory containing whitespaces (e.g. "Program files"), as some registry entries get messed up by the white space. Than try to change the installation path to something that does not contain any whitespaces.

P.S.: Sorry for my comment about reading stickies. Sometimes it gets exhausting answereing the same questions over and over. I tryed to make my comment not offensiv.

From what I know, MPEG-4 ASP = - ISO 14496-2 (Video) and MPEG-4 ASP = ISO 14496-10 (Video), both equally valid sub-standards of MPEG-4.

And the mpeg standards define only the decoder. So, level 10 decoder can decode avc.

Profiles determine which features the decoder must support.
Levels determine how much CPU-time/memory may be required of the decoder.
Part2 and Part10 are completely separate standards, which happen to share the name "MPEG-4".
ISO 14496-2 aka MPEG-4 part2 has one set of profiles, ("simple", "advanced simple", "advanced real-time simple", "simple scalable", "advanced", "hybrid", "core studio", and several others)
ISO 14496-10 aka MPEG-4 part10 aka H.264 has its own set of profiles ("baseline", "extended", "main", "high", "high 10", "high 4:2:2", "high 4:4:4")
The most common profile of MPEG-4 part2 is "advanced simple" (ASP), while the highest profile of H.264 that has been implemented outside of the reference codec is "main".

Could you tell me when the four "high" profiles were adopted? I have not found any reference. The basic "high profile" was included in the DVB HDTV standard as mandated.

Thanks akupenguin taht was what i meaned with my reply. It is importent donīt to use Words that are importent to Standards like "profile" in MPEG.
@thegeby: a little search at google with '14496 "high 4:2:2"'
a link to the public ISO/IEC 14496-4:200X/PDAM 9 document wich contain the new profiles.

ffdshow now has a VFW wrapper that goes in the system32/system directory, so no more path problems.
If you do grab the a build from sourceforge you might still want to grab a x264 dll from me.

Thanks Akupenguin. It does look to me that it is not finalised, which would imply that the ETSI standardisation used by DVB will come later.... Too bad.

It looks like the high profiles (formerly "FRext") have not yet been published as a final standard, but the format was finalized in july, and integrated into the reference codec (http://iphome.hhi.de/suehring/tml/) in october. I don't know anywhere free/linkable you can the complete draft standard in one piece, but you can find it as a series of patches at:
JVT-G050 (ftp://standards.polycom.com/2003_03_Pattaya/JVT-G050r1.zip) + JVT-K050 (ftp://standards.polycom.com/2004_03_Munich/JVT-K050r1.zip) + JVT-L047 (ftp://standards.polycom.com/2004_07_Redmond/JVT-L047d9.zip) + JVT-M049 (ftp://standards.polycom.com/2004_10_Palma/JVT-M049d0.zip)

Can ne one tell me how are that .h264 files Encoded using which
software are those Vids Encoded the Quality is gr8.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
- I tried the x264 Codec in FFDSHOW using Vdub for Compression
the size of the compressed video is more than Xvid Compression.
and i am not satisified
- I also tried VSS (Vanguard) H.264 Codec but Still Quality not
upto the mark.
Wating for ur Replies.

Very short answer: all h.264 codec are in too early stages of development to rival XviD in anything but very low bitrates. With the exception of Ateme's h.264 codec (Ahead - Nero); and that one isn't even out yet.
So you can experiment and have fun with these codecs but don't look into them for serious backup purposes.
