View Full Version : Different burns from Different Burners

I've got a question about the way two different burners are burning the same ISO file.

I have a Samsung SH-W08A fm 1S31 in one system and a Pioneer DVR-108 fm 1.14 in another system.

I noticed something about the DVD's burned on the W08A and was curious if anyone had any ideas about what causes it?

Using the same ISO file, I burned a DVD on both of the above burners. The DVD burned on the Samsung appears to only have used half the DVD (you can see the burn mark only goes to half the disc) while on the Pioneer the burn took up most the DVD. Any idea why this is? Both DVD's seem to work fine.. but the ISO file "should" take up most the DVD as it is 4,666,855,424 bytes.

It's not a problem as the DVD's both work, but I'm curious as to why this happens. If I can use the entire DVD than I want to for sake of quality. It kinda seems like the Samsung drive itself is doing some kind of compression??? Thanks in advance for the replies!

It might be that the Samsung burner burnt half of the DVD at one speed and the rest at another (some burners use a constant rate in a given zone). You would definitely see the difference between the two. What you interpret as a "no-burn" area of the disc is probably an area burnt at a different speed...

Thanks for the reply jeanl, I was going to try and experiment to see if it was just a freak incident, but what you said makes a lot of sense. Especially since the one drive is 16X and the other is only 8X. Thanks again.
