This maybe a dumb question, but I am wondering if a Divx file can be "re-encoded" after it's initially been encoded to Divx format and still benefit in size reduction while not losing picture quality? Simply put: Can you run a movie thru Divx twice to maximize final output size? To clarify, I am already putting it thru a two pass encoding, but wonder if my movie could still be crunched down again after it's been encoded once already and not lose any picture quality?

Codecs such as MPEG1/2/4 are lossy, therefore any compression leads to lower quality
Compressing from high bitrate sources (DVD e.g.) is acceptable since there is enough info to "throw away" and still keep decent quality
Reencoding MPEG4 is particularly not recommended

nope, that wouldnt make sense as it would imply the codec does a lousy job while encoding the first time. :)

Superspeed, why don't you just try it once, and see if you like it. Personally I think it will probably end up looking degraded. But if you like it, why should we argue?

Drop the resolution you encode to. This would be a better bet.

Thanks for the replies!! I was only asking out of curiosity, thinking perhaps that the files could be "powerpacked" from doing the procedure as mentioned. As I stated in the first sentance of my question, "Maybe a dumb...." I was aware of the facts about AVI\MP4 files, such as lossless, resolution size vs. quality, etc., but was merely curious if such actions would benefit the file size. The movies I've encoded are actually just fine where quality and file size are concerned. I was just hoping that perhaps they could be shrinked in size for same reason everybody in this forum is member.......to maximize file efficiency while making the smallest size attainable! Pardon my ignorance and questioning altogether! I was simply wanting what does not exist. Even smaller movie file sizes of great quality.

I UNDERSTAND!!! Need not send any replies to this message because it has long since been answered!! (probably when I initially sent the question to begin with) Regardless I am aware that this only will make the video quality drop dramatically!!! Thanx for the input tho!!
If you must answer a question, Answer why I am having such difficulties opening my encoded files in Vegas Video? (see other entry in audio encoding, or search posts entered by me. Thanx!!
