XviD doesn't care about my manually set filesizes ?!?

Hi, Im using XviD 1.0.2 and I didn't find anything similiar to my problem in the faq or the forum, so...

Anyway, my problem is this: I use GK (latest version) and XviD and usually encode every movie for an intended filesize of 1400 MB. Weired is though, that even if I enter those values in the gk-bitrate-tab, they seem to get lost somewhere along the way.
For when I look into the advanced codec-settings just before starting encoding, it shows 700MB as the selected output filesize. After manually changing that value again to 1400MB (first and second pass settings of course) and starting encoding, I still get only a 700MB-movie.

What am I doing wrong :confused:

hmmm... Im not sure, it's a prob of Gknot. :confused:

Since the output filesize is wrong even *after* I manually change the values in the first- and second-pass tabs of the codec (no matter whether gk submits the information of the bitrate-tab correctly or not), I guessed it'd be a problem of xvid rather than gknot?

small addition:

I found a section in the gk-faq that may relate to my problem. It says there that when formerly using XviD and then installing XviD 1.0.x, extremely under- or oversized files may result.
Can't remember how I updated my gk-bundle (whether I first uninstalled everything then installed new or not) but in my software-list there is only on entry, XviD 1.0.X

At any rate, my files are not undersized, they are simple one-cd-encodings, so i guess Im talking about a different phenomenon.

well, hopefully someone got an idea to help me out ;o)

De-install and reinstall XviD. Then, see if the problem reoccurs. If it does, post a Gknot log file here.

as you can see, the size of 1400MB seem to be correctly handed over to XviD, yet the final movie is only 586MB

I think I see a problem; whether it solves all of your ills, is tough to say. But I found this:Quality: 0.335 bits/(pixel*frame).
CompCheck3: 0.000 bits/(pixel*frame).
CompCheck5: 0.331 bits/(pixel*frame).
Resolution: 704 x 288Your compressibility test showed that the maximum possible bits/pixel*frame value achievable at 704x288 is .331. You're asking for 0.335, which is 101%, more than is achievable. Best practice is to work for the 60-80% range.

In other words, you will not reach your expected filesize.

There's a sticky in the DivX Encoding forum which you probably didn't see, since it's DivX, rather than XviD, but it's still applicable to pretty much any MPEG-4 based codec.

yeah, I agree 102% is a leetle bit too much to ask for, but I would expect that gk reduces the quality to the mentioned 60%-80% percent (which is by the way usually the same value I am shooting for) and not to something way below that.
Deinstalled XviD, reinstalled it and reencoded the movie - same result, although a different filesize: 570MB instead of 586MB:confused:

I looked in the first- and secondpass stats file - I guess the values look ok. To make sure I copy the relevant section:

Well, I never had a prob. like this with the old XviD, regardless whether the quality was60% or 80% or higher.

But I dont think it applies to my situation. My file is not 50MB or so off the mark but about 700MB! And if my stats show that my intended size of 1400MB would mean a quality of 102%, I would expect gk to at least return a file of, say, 1,2GB or so....

Did you try the "delete registry Keys" on the "options" tab?
Maybe youre using the settings from an older "save" slot.
After deleting the registry keys, you sure have to set up your
preferred Xvid and (or)Divx settings. (Options tab too).
Look at the program path tab if everything is in place.
Reset the save slot.
Load your *.d2v file and see what will happen :D ;)
Edit: What makes me wonder: You can't fill in target size in the first pass tab in Xvid config! Are youre sure your using two pass=first pass and then two pass=second pass?
I think the Xvid settings are burked.

AutoGK, yes. GK, no. You must adjust resolution or filesize to reach the appropriate percentages. And, perhaps, change or adjust video filters and/or codec settings. With the last two, you'll need to run compression tests again.

I have deleted my registry keys probably about a thousand times ;o)
about the first- and second-pass settings and that I shouldnt be able to alter them ---- yeah, made me wonder as well. INteresting as well: with the old XviD-version it alsways had "first pass" and then "second pass" written in the appropriate tabs. Now it says in both tabs "single pass"something.

Doesnt change the fact that it strikes me kinda odd that gk for some reason choses to encode my movie at (presumably) about 40% just because I went 2 percent above the top. You dont think that funny?

You have to set up both tabs to the according values.
So, first tab: Xvid "Two pass=First Pass" and second tab: Two pass=second pass as the defaults.
You can alter this settings right before you start encoding. Just push the "add" button and on the Xvid tabs you can do some additonal
tweakings on first and two pass.
I think you know this anyway.....

Well, I thought those new values had someting to do with new features, better results doing it twice in one-pass-mode or something. Ill try changing both values to first- and second-pass yet I doubt a little that this will solve my prob since (as the logs show) the desired filesize of 1400MB were handed over both times to the codec.
