View Full Version : Instant Copy 8 Is better than DVDshrink

By a long shot is IC8 better than DVDshrink when you use high quality that is. Also a good way to get a proper file size use Instant copy hidden settings (set the output size to more than a regular DVD5 trust me it works), there isnt a version that works with the new updates. DVDshrink is garbage and whoever think it is better than IC8 should be shot into the sun. Byte for byte video quality is better.

Why do you think it's better? I'm having a hard time deciding. I do tests, and still can't decide. I know Shrink is easier and faster, but I care about quality not speed. I'm wondering which is better if you need to go clear down to like 52%

on the dvdshrink forum there was some tests done with Lord Of The Rings and people found it hard to pick which was instantcopy and which was dvdshrink. some prefering 1 to the other but both generally very good.

ddlooping said(from memory) he prefered dvdshrink for LOTR but he also tested Terminator 2 and IC looked better for that.

so it all depends on the film and your own personal opinion. both programs can give very good results.

...well! that's me convinced. i'll never use Shrink again.

(hehe)

[edit]

by the way, NASA could really use something that is capable of safely delivering a human to such distances as the 8 light-seconds to the sun.

please inform them of your sun-shooting solution - it could benefit mankind a great deal to have cheap, safe and reliable transport for such great distances.

Simply put commander, if you are trying to encode at %52 you are going to get poor results with both shrink and IC8 (even though ic8 is better). Try something like DVD rebuilder for encodes that are under %60. Really CCE is the best for encoding video but hardest to use. IC8 shines best at %70 or over. I've seen good encodes at %60 and I could barely tell the difference.

Why would you even encode LOTR with shrink or IC8 they look like shit, CCE looks ok but in my opinion it is still poor.

Mmmmmm.... I think that somebody forgot to tell something very important here:
Instant Copy 8: $29.99
DVD Shrink: FREE!
I think it is already enough!

IC 8 is great but i cant get it to output anything 4GB+.
With the punisher i set the output size to 4.88gb and came out with: 3.53 GB (3,796,140,032 bytes)...when you say modify the output size do you mean changeing the values in the powertoys tab or video size per title.

IC8 always apply a minimum compression, that why most 5GB-ish titles will always get results under 4GB. Usually with bigger title you never get less than 4.2GBs.

is there a way to have ic8 use a smaller compression then the default minimum. I just put "minimum reduction in quality mode" from 30% to 10% (in powertoys tab) with exact same results. Im sure the video plays fine, but in the back of my head i cant help think it could be better if it used the whole 4.2gigs.

I'm using Instantcopy 8 for one and a half year and i never had a serious undersize problem.I sometimes get 4,28 GB output instead of 4,37.Thats the worst ocassion.I usually get 4,36 GB.I keep the menus,5.1 dolby, extras and all the commentaries. The result is almost perfect.Of course here in Greece nobody has bought the plasma or HD monitors or 200 inch monitors, maybe thats why it looks perfect to me.And of course i belive the quality is better than DvdShrink.

The big diff is Shrink is FREE!!!

I have both and still like shrink much better.
quality to me is equal.
Some things shrink does much better. like episode disc
others IC8 does better. Like heavy action movies.

overall I use shrink 90% of the time.

I have Instantcopy 8 for free .We have to pay sometimes when something is good anyway.I agree that Dvdshrink offers too much for being a FREE program. But everyone of us has a different opinion about 'MOVIE QUALITY' so if someone likes DvdShrink or InstantCopy no problem.Nobody should try to convince the others we just say our experiences and opinions by trying all these programs.

Hard oh give me a break. You want hard try any of the big 3 or better yet do the CCE thing manually (decrypt, demux, encode, reauthor) Now thats hard. With DVD rebuilder all you do for a basic encode is set your source and destination paths. Most of the rebuilder defaults will work fine.

Both instacopy and dvd shrink give good results but to comparing stills is a waste of time. Also not all movies give the same results. Some movies look great transcoded and others stink. Its the motion and fluidty of the movie that count. my rule of thumb is if compression is below 75% then rebuilder is the way to go

Agree! I think this thread is nonsence, it will be very nice if some moderator close it. If somebody want to make tests between both programs, go ahead. But please, it is not nice to put: "DVD Shrink better than..." or "Instant Copy 8 better than..." everybody know how subjetive and personal are the opinions about quality between programs.
This is the same that asking "What is the best?"...obviously forbidden in this forum.
Greetings! :)

"DVDshrink is garbage..."

If you don't like it, don't use it.
DVDShrink probably spent hundreds of hours of his time, developing what I think is a great program, one that I would pay for, then gives it to all us for free.
He deserves to be respected for his skill and generosity and not have his hard work called "garbage".

I agree with Richk50 - nobody's hard work should be refered to as "garbage". I've been on this scene for quite awhile now, and, while I've never used InstantCopy, I have used CCE (doing it the old manual way) and DVDShrink, both are more suited for certain material in certain situations, however, the "certain" is highly subjective to personal opinion, judging one over the other is useless, as it is different for each source.

Things have come such a long way though, remember trying to transcode with ReMPEG ? or how 'bout decrypting with Vstrip ? I want to say to all the authors who have donated so much of their skill and time, Thank you. Everybody who contributes, whether it be in posting or programming, has made this community that much more valuable in the quest for effectively backing-up the DVD.

Well, it seems Nero doesn't feel DVD Shrink is crap. ;)

I think you all fell to a troll........

lol, same old same old :D, 'IC is better than Shrink' blah blah and 'But DVDShrink is free' blah blah

regardless of price and as long as it's priced reasonably then I don't care if it's free or not as long as it's the 'best' in my eyes and I'm satisfied with the results

castellanos has hit the nail on the head with his post

in the end who honestly gives a toss what anyone else says? If you are really that bothered that someone uses another tool to the one that you use then CLICK HERE (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=563249#post563249)

Amen to that castellanos! ;)

Why is there always somebody that wants to come along and start a "My Dad is better than your Dad!" type non constructive thread?

gizzin, I really don't give a toss what software you use to be frank because to come along and insult other peoples choices is not just plain rude (towards the members here and the software creators too) it is also against the Doom 9 forum rules to ask/say "What is Best". You are the weakest link, goodbye.

grow up gizzin and don't be petty and childish

try to learn to accept what is 'best' for you is not 'best for others without resorting to personal attacks

the sooner this thread is closed the better :D as it's pointless (as usual with these types of threads :p)
