View Full Version : Adding Chapters to AVI (Divx5.1)

i'm trying to add chapters to an avi file...i created the 'ogg.txt' file from dvd-encrypter...loaded into V-dubMod as described in the doom9 guide...did direct stream processing on both audio and video streams...save as movie.avi...

V-dubMod does it's thing, but no chapters when i view in nero-showtime...

so, i did a test backup using nero recode to digital...got movie.mp4...

when i play movie.mp4 in nero-showtime, i press L and i get the chapter listing...good deal...but, lame, since i can't play on standalone...even my divx compatible philips dvd player won't play it...although, it does recognize it as mpeg4...

however, when i play movie.avi in nero-showtime (after chapter insertion through V-dubMod) i get only the first chapter, which restarts the movie...

the only major difference in the two processes is the chapters, that worked from nero-digital, were done at the same time the encode happened...sort of 'live' if you will...

the avi file in V-dubMod was done w/out chapters, then i imported the 'ogg.txt' file from dvd-decrypter...did the save as and all that...

from what i read on the Doom9 guide, it really shouldn't matter if the .avi file already exists, so the the fact that nero-digital did the chapters when the file was initially created doesn't matter, that i can tell...

so...???

does anybody have any experience with adding chapters to a divx5.1 encoded movie???

am i missing something???

thank you...

as bond said you can't do it.

from alexnoes's HP:
General Beginning with Version 1.15, you can define chapters, which can be written to Matroska files. There is currently no possibility to store chapters to an AVI file. Although there is a hack by Vidomi to store chapters in AVI files, those files exceed the AVI file specs and will only play in players that explicitely support that hack.

You can use MKV (or OGM) or MP4 instead....

in a word....lame...

thanks for the feedback, bond & firewalker...i was worried about that from what i was reading, or not reading...if you really think about it...

a couple thoughts and then i'll put the knife in this one myself...

if i understand the whole "container" issue...nero's mpeg4 format is it's own container (platform for this thought), and not much support for this "platform" exists at this time...this particular "platform" supports chapters and all that...

matroska ang ogg are their own containers and have their own attributres and properties...one of which is chapter support...so on so forth...

somebody told me vlc was a great player, but i can't see how to manuever through the chapters using vlc...

in another word...lame...

anyhow, thanks for the help...

nero's mpeg4 format is it's own container (platform for this thought)wrong, nero didnt invent .mp4 it only uses it, like many other people use it too as .mp4 is the container format defined in the mpeg-4 standard. its therefore "its own container", like .ogm and matroska and nothing closed only used by nero

and not much support for this "platform" exists at this time...this particular "platform" supports chapters and all that..thats also not true
if you have a look at my mp4 faq you will see that .mp4 is supported in a broad range of tools (hardware and software), you can play for example .mp4 files in quicktime, realplayer and windowsmediaplayer already, on some hardware players (like the ones from philips) aso...

thanks for the info, bond...

what i meant by the "not much support for this platform..." comment was moreso regarding standalone players versus software...i have seen info on the different players (vlc for one)...my bad...i should have been more clear in what i meant...

i will look for your mp4 forum...
