It's back again. I've switched to a new motherboard on my machine - everything else is the same - and now I am having problems with DVD2DVD with authorization.

I have tried three different ASPI's: (a) the one on DVD2DVD.ORG (4.57/4.60), (b) the one on the Adaptec website (4.712), and (c) another that I found, which was version 4.60. None of them make any difference - I still have the same problem.

I have also changed drives - I have 2 DVD drives, and the problem occurs regardless of the drive that I use. One is LG, the other is AOPEN.

If I try to run "Auth_call.exe" directly, it fails with an error message.

Does anyone have any suggestions for anything else to try?

This posting is probably a followup to this thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60684 ... makes it easier to understand what this posting is about.

Unfortunately I have no suggestions - I never encountered a problem like yours.

That posting was mine from a while ago and referred to a problem on another machine. That problem was the typical issue, which was related to the ASPI layer. A change of the version of ASPI fixed that issue.

This is a different machine. I have tried 4 different ASPI layers. None fix this problem with Auth_call failing or not ending.

However, going on the premise that Auth_call can be an erzatz program anyway - I tried the following experiment: I replaced Auth_call.exe in the C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD directory with another DOS executable that was a "do nothing". All it would do is run and return a zero error code. Lo and behold - DVD2SVCD is working fine now. The disk I was attempting to read isn't encrypted, so authentication wasn't needed.

So - DVD2SVCD - is there a somewhat more sophisticated approach that can be taken in Auth_call.exe to make it a little more robust? Is this your code? Does that program anticipate the condition of a disk not being protected? It isn't nice that the Auth_call simply sits there and hangs. And I did have a valid ASPI layer because SmartRipper, DVDDecrypter and Nero all seem to work fine.
