View Full Version : Problem with DVDDecrypter and Nero

Hi, hopefully this is in the right section..

I recently backed up a couple of my DVDs, first ripping them with DVD Decrypter and saving them as an iso file. Then I used Nero Recode 2 to strip unwanted extras and burn with my LiteOn LDW-811S burner.
I have had a few playback issues when using my Sony stand alone player. One disc would not play at all, another would play then jump forward a few seconds and sometimes freeze for a second or two. These were TDK discs and were brand new with no scratches.

I have backed up other DVDs using DVD Shrink with Verbatim and Imation discs with no problems. Of course I could just go back to using DVD Shrink, but I really like the functions of Nero Recode. This problem seems quite strange to me, as using free software and cheaper discs gave better results than the paid-for software and more expensive (TDK) discs! Any ideas on what could have caused the problems, or do you think I was just unlucky? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sounds like bad disks.
Have you tried recode with the imation or verbatim disks. I've only used ritek GO4 disks and have never had a problem with them (500 burns and only 1 coster). I've used them with shrink, Recode and rebuilder and I always rip with decrypter.

I'll have a look for those Ritek discs and give them a try. I did try a Verbatim disc with Recode and it also froze for a second but then seemed ok after that. Maybe I have had a few bad discs, but they seem to play ok on my computer. I'm thinking maybe the problem lies with my Sony stand alone DVD player, maybe it doesn't like reading burnt discs?? I use -R discs by the way, and according to the instructions, the Sony player will read this format.
Also, should it make any difference burning at 2x or 4x?

@kbilly

If your blanks are rated for 4X, then burning at 4X should give you optimal results so long as you don't run into buffering problems. If they're only rated for 2X -- and you burn them at 4X -- then you'll likely run into problems which may include the type you describe. Make sure Nero's set for the media you're using: I've seen problems if Nero's set to automatically detect the burning speed. Since computers process DVDs differently than set top players, flawless playback on a computer isn't much for ensuring that your disk will play on a set top. With a Sony, - or + R shouldn't be an issue.

Also, make sure that you're using the most recent version of Nero 6, just in case they've fixed a bug or two since your last install.

If 4X's your cup of tea, by the way, Newegg.com always has sweet pricing on Ritek +Rs (assuming that you're able to burn either format on your burner). At the time of this writing, they want $35 for a spindle of 100... may want to check them out! ;)

You can also look at meritline.com or shop4tech.com $35 - 39 per 100 for ritek G04 -R's plus free shipping.

Also If you do a search on the model number of your sony player in the forums you will see a lot of dvd-r related problems are assoicated with it or sony in general. You may want to think about replacing it. I use a panasonic set top dvd player and they work great with 99.9% of the projects I do. You don't have to go super expensive in fact I've read that cheap no name brands such as apex will play just about anything.

I love newegg.com you can not beat there prices on PC parts and the service is great. In fact my complete computer and network system (3 PC's and gigabyte network) came from them as well as many others I've built over the years. For the best DVD media deals I've found that you can't beat the two I've just mentioned above.
