Well, there are a few I know: "DVD Region+CSS Free" is one of them, unfortunatelly it is not free, but you can try here (http://www.dvd43.com/), I am sure that this program (DVD43) works exactly as AnyDVD or DVD Region Free, but I don't know if it is free or not. You can try.
Greetings! :)

EDIT: Yes, definetely, the link I sent you is a free version of DVD43 :D

You need the pattin couffin driver unless you have CopytoDVD or Blindwrite installed both commerical programs. Unfortunately I don't see it for download anymore. http://www.vso-software.fr/download.htm

I still have dvd43 and the pattin couffin driver here for download

If you only need a region-free tool (or better: automatic region switcher) and not a CSS decrypter, you can try Elby's old freeware program, DVD Region Killer. It's not available officially anymore (after all it has been replaced with the payware AnyDVD), but you can still find it by googling for "setupregkill". The last version is 2.7.0.2.

I guess I kind of miss the point to programs like these when you have something like DVD Decrypter that can do all this for you... And that way you have all the files exactly as they appear on the dvd, sans the encryption, to play around with.

I use AnyDVD to make my Region 2 drive behave like a Region 1 drive.

On my system DVD Decrypter will not always read a Region 1 disc until I load AnyDVD first. The same applies to reading the DVD in Shrink.

A couple of times, DVD Decrypter will read a region 1 if I cancel the autorun of the DVD and then it has to do it in very slow brute force mode. It makes more sense to run AnyDVD before Decrypter/Shrink.

AAAAhhh.. I see. I guess i never run into these issues because ALLL my dvd's are from region 1. Just curious. In what situations would you have a region 1 disc when you are from a region 2 area? Do some dvd's not come out in region 2, which in turn forces you to get the region 1 disc?

I also use AnyDVD instead of flashing the drive to region free. It is a safer way of doing it.

About a third of my DVD's are region 1. Region 1 DVD's come out as early as six months ahead of R2. Sometimes the R1 DVD is out before it hits the cinema over here.

Also, many R1 DVD's used to be much better but, now many are identical. There is also only a few days between releases. This only happens with blockbusters though.

I got the R1 Ultimate Version of T2. The R2 version was over six months later and only had the special edition of the film. There was no seemless branching with three versions of the film.

I got the R1 version of Highlander : Endgame. By the time it came out over here it didn't show up at the cinema and endedup straight to video/DVD nearly a year later !!

I even got the R1 of the Extended Editions of LOTR because of the packaging. Even though the discs are the same on R2, the packaging is awful. It uses cheap thin cardboard that tears rather than the thick cardboard of the R1.

If you don't travel so much, may be it is nonsence for you to have this "on the fly" decryption tools. For me: I live in Germany and I fly everytime I can to Argentina (regions 2 and 4 respectively) so, those tools are very useful, and as nwg already said, DVD Decrypter "brute force" option it is not only slow... it doesn't work all the time.
Another application of these programs (I use DVD Region+CSS Free) is that, to make back ups, you can use all the programs you want, even those who do not decrypt, example: Nero Recode, Clone DVD, Pinnacle Instant Copy etc... you can make the transcoding (in the case of a DVD5 back up) without decrypting before... and I found that very useful.
But of course, this is my personal opinion, you may think something different...and I like that too. :D
Greetings!

Yea I admit I dont travel much... And if I do travel I usually dont buy dvd's anywhere, because I can get pretty much any dvd I want here in the good ole USA. If I cant find it here I can most likely find it somewhere online in ntsc region 1 format. I dont know if other regions are different but I think pretty much every dvd made has a region 1 ntsc version... Though I admit I havent looked for too many obscure foreign films.

EDIT: My point being that I have, as yet, had no need whatsoever for support of any other region codes.

I forgot to mention the number one reason for buying another region. Most of the time they are lot cheaper.

The LOTR : ROTK EE should work out at £13 plus postage of about £3.50. The R2 will be between £20 and £25 at most places.

I also got The X Files/Angel boxsets from R4 for £18 each where the R2 is normally £70-£80 each. Even when they are on sale in R2 they are about £30 to £40 at the cheapest.

If I was living in the US or Canada, I wouldn't expect have to buy another region.
