View Full Version : Best Video Compression in VirtualDub???

I use VirtualDub to compress/encode my .avi's and mount my backup DVDs of the stuff i think is interesting. Question is: for those of you who have been using VirtualDub for quite a while, what is the best compression filter to use? Best in quality and in size, that's the desirable, but I'd rather opt for quality, for when they are encoded into DVD NTSC format (mpeg2), they keep the best quality possible. I understand there must be a combination of things and steps to be used. Any tips available? I have lots of codecs installed. I use Klite Codec pack v.2.26, ffdshow 20041012-sse2, DivX and XviD stuff. Help me guys, and thank you all. And if you DO have the stuff I'll be needing, please, show me the way.
And one more thing though it's recurrent: what is this screen I got when trying to open an avi in VobSub? What shall i do with the file in order to fix this error message?

I really doubt that, as VobSub is solely for subtitles - could it be you mean VirtualDub?

Yeah Leak, this is it. I had VobSub in mind but I have already corrected the mess. You're right, it's VirtualDub! I think the post title is correct now. And I couldn't post the image file of the error message I mentioned. How do I do that?
Thanx.:D

From what I`ve seen the GENUINE DIVX5.2 gives a great picture, best to keep the audio as std (just demux it from the dvd) and look for an avi file size of around 1.5gb. If it`s for backup purposes I`d just burn a straight copy of the uncompressed dvd to a blank as any enoding will result in a quality loss, however DIVX is amazing when using reasonable file sizes.
Goolge Duivx and instal their codec, Virtualdub should be able to use it with no problems (*have found conflicts with that and the 3ivx codec installed together) Have heard the Klite pack can cause crashes as well?

keithmac, I've had no crashes around here using klite pack. Only problem is video "stammering" now and then. I use RadLight 3SE as my player, didn't like BSPlay much. What do you suggest? I'm still looking for DiVX 5.2. Suggestions as where to find it quick? Have had results through P2P but haven't got it completely.
Thanx a lot.

1. its against the rules of this forum to ask whats best because people will always have different opinions.
2. divx codec can be downloaded from www.divx.com, both free and trial pro versions. infact this forum also has a divx section where you can ask questions about it.
3. there is a virtualdub section on this forum aswell incase you have questions about using it.
4. your question is not related to how to decrypt dvds so does not belong in this section.

Thanx for the tip. Sorry for the forum misplacement. I see you've fixed it. The shortcut you provided took me to a site which does not have anything about DivX, it's just like a Google Search or something.
I have already purchased DiVX5.2. Didn't like it though. It's a playa which does not support sub viewing, what Radlight does.
And as to the different opinions about which stuff to use to get the best of video compression, that's exactly what I want, then I can try them and see what's close to the best, which is a very abstract concept, besides being too personal.
Thanx again for your time.;)

well 1 of the mods moved it not me. :)
url for divx fixed, the comma next to it was included. your browser couldnt find that so went to a search site. IE does that by default from memory. try it now and you will see what i mean.
divx is not just a player. it is a video compression codec. the download bundle come with a player aswell but you do not have to use it.
asking for different codecs you can try yourself is not the same as asking whats best. as i said asking whats best is against the rules. :)
some codecs to try and see which you prefer - divx, xvid, vp6
divx and xvid have their own sections here and information on vp6 can be found(as in searched for) in the new a/v formats - codecs section.

I'm casting a vote for Xvid. It's as good as DivX 4 and, I think, as DivX 5 and it's 100% absolutely, no strings free.
