Is there a estimation of the final file size of VDub?

When I compress my uncompressed AVI, it comes out a much larger file then I would like. A 5min file is coming out at 60mb, is this normal?

The first time I used VDub, I got a 50min file to 230mb with good quality, but since then I've not been able to get anywhere near to that.

Is there a way of reducing the file size greatly more (filters etc.), or do I have to put up with large video file sizes?

(Should I be providing some details? I'm not sure.)

Yes, please. My crystal ball is currently out of order and the replacement won't be here before next week... :D

You do know that the filesize depends on the codec, the codec settings used, the complexity of the material you want to encode and the dimensions of the video, right? If I compress 2 hours containing a single black frame the file size will be miniscule compared to compressing 2 hours of white noise... *hint hint*

Rightyho then...

I hope your crytal ball comes in ship shape when it arrives.

It is an anolouge TV capture so I suppose you can guess the quality of it.
Yes, I do know that the filesize depends on the codec etc. I have used DivX and XviD both with different settings but they both produce, around about, the same filesize.

Since it's an anolouge capture, I use a deinterlacing filter (I used to use DeinterlaceMAP but I cannot find it anywhere), a noise reducer and a smoother. After that I use resize to reduce it. But for some reason, no matter what I choose, it comes out about the same size.

Anything else I should provide then? I'm quite new to this.

You wouldn't happen to store uncompressed audio in the resulting file? If it's CD quality audio, it'll be around 600MB/hour... just a wild guess, though.

uuuuuuuuuuuhmmmmmmmmmmmmm, depending on your settings this will determine your file size:

a. if you for example use XviD with a constant quant encode, theres no way of determining outcoming the filesize in front, but with a higher quant you'll get a smaller file

b. if you are selecting a bit rate this is what is determining your file size together with your file lenght

formula: file size = bit rate*file lenght*1000/(8*1024^2)

(file size in MB, bit rate in kbps, file length in seconds)

note: to calculate the *total* file size you can add your audio bit rate to your video bit rate and use above formula
