Don't burst out laughing, this is a serious question. Is it possible to replace the dvd drive in your standalone dvd player with a hard disk?
I'm thinking of getting a whacking big hard drive, plonk on all my dvd's in the drive and create a DVD menu that provides the movie selection.

In theory it is possible :) ... BUT:
You will have to find a player which still uses a more-or-less "standard" IDE interface - most new players don't use standard pc dvd-roms anymore. Then, that player has to actually accept a hdd on its interface ...
Next, find out which filesystem on the hdd is required ... I remember some guys trying this with real old Raite players (71x series), I believe they had to format it as cdfs (possible under linux).
The best they achieved was mp3 playback from the harddisk ... dvd playback wouldn't work :(.
The place to ask this sort of question are probably the nerd-out.com forums ...
Good luck,
Steve
NB: Posting in the "hardware players" might have gotten you more replies ...
