I've tried to backup Lord of the Rings, Return of the King 4 times. It gets to about 98% and then the Windows screen "encountered a problem" comes up and it shuts down. Has anyone else had this problem and could maybe suggest a solution? It only seems to be this one. I use DVD decrypter to rip, then Daemon tools to mount image. Instant copy is version 7.

load the dvd in dvdshrink. set everything to "no compression". output to hd folder. load hd folder in instantcopy and proceed as normal. see how that goes for you.
i know a guy who could not backup his farscape dvds without running them through dvdshrink first. :)
of course you can also try letting dvdshrink compress it aswell and see which you prefer for that movie. some people at the official dvdshrink forum did(movie only) and prefered dvdshrink for LOTR over instantcopy.

dvdshrink is a transcoder like instantcopy. it does have css decryption etc which instantcopy doesnt. so you dont need to rip using dvddecrypter first, unless you run in to a bad or funny dvd. :)
it can be downloaded here
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/
and theres even a nice little guide to get you started with using it.
as for quality, well as i said some people found LOTR done with dvdshrink and instantcopy hard to pick apart, as in which was better. while for terminator 2 instantcopy apparently looked much better. so make of that what you will. :D

okay, i downloaded dvd shrink and followed the guide for the settings, but when i see the files on my HD, there are 11 files there. 2 IFO files (1 video_ts the other is VTS) the others are just VTS files. I cant mount an image with daemon tools because it has to be just one large file. are there settings to put all the above files into 1? i'm sorry if i sound like an idiot, once i figured out how to do it the old way, i get very frustrated when it doesnt work! I appreciate your help

output from dvdshrink to iso, its selectable in the window that pops up after you hit the "backup" button.
the iso can be mounted by daemon tools or burned with dvddecrypter.
