I assume that this is the correct formum to post in because I am still fairly new at backing up my DVDs. I went to the computer store to get technical support for backing up my movie and then burn it onto a dvd that would be able to play in a DVD player. They told me that they couldn’t show me how to do that that because it ain’t legal to give advice, but it’s my movie that I want to back up. I tried the movies that I had and none of them worked to even load the file into the program to burn the movie onto a dvd and not only that,
the dvd burning program was totally confusing? They did tell me some things that I need to do. They looked at the file structure of my movies and told me that it was “raw”, whatever that means, but because I had a bunch of VOB files it would not work. They told me that it needs to be an MPEG file and then I will be able to burn it onto a DVD and it would be able to play on a DVD player. They told me the steps to take with the dvd burning software to get started on burning a DVD. They told me about DVD Shrink at the computer store. DVD Shrink is supposed to make a movie into a MPEG file, so I showed them that 1 movie that I used and it didn’t make it into an MPEG file. I did the “backup” thing, but I noticed that it said, “not encrypted.” I thought that backing it up was going to encrypt it, but apparently not. I tried to read the directions in doom9 and it was totally confusing. I probably just haven't found the right page, yet. On the page I was looking at said something that if the movie doesn’t need to be shrunk, go to dvd decrypter and I have used that for movies and apparently it is supposed to make the file into an MPEG and I tried that and it doesn’t become an MPEG. I tried a couple of different methods and the movie copies onto the hard drive like the way it is on the DVD, but it doesn’t become an MPEG file. There was a part in there that mentioned something about codec. Actually, I totally forgot about codec and heard that it was something that was needed to make divx files, but I have been able to successfully figure out how to make my movies into divx files, but I can’t figure out how to make movies into MPEGs. I have been able to use Robot4Rip and Gordian Knot to make my movies into divx files and I have been successful at that. I assume that I do knot use either of those programs to make my movies into MPEGs and use DVD shrink, but DVD shrink didn’t make my movie into an MPEG file. I have a movie that is small enough to fit on a 4.7 gigabyte DVD and would I still use DVD shrink to make the movie into an MPEG file? Also, I know that I downloaded codec, but don’t remember using it to make my movies into divx files. I went to the part in Doom9 where it mentions MPEGs and what they mentioned didn’t relate to converting what’s on a DVD to an MPEG. It was just confusing. I think the same thing is used for video CDs, but I ain’t sure? Is it possible to have an MPEG movie at 700 megabytes? Also, at the computer store, they told me that divx files can be converted to MPEG files, but you need a program that does that. What program does do that? It might be easier to make an MPEG file from a divx file? I will appreciate anyone who can give me instructions on how to do this.

im new to this too, but have a look around for something like dvdshrink 3.2, that little babe does it all, rips, decrypts and uses ya burning softwear like nero to finish the job.

theres a lot more fancy ways to do things and im still a newbe too, so ill let the other guys fill you in there.

hi altmind and welcome to the forum!

it seems as though the 'computer store technical support team' has managed to get you completely confused in regards to what you are trying to achieve - backing up your dvd!

so ...

i suggest you start with the Bascis (http://www.doom9.org/dvd-basics.htm), in particular the section; What's on a DVD? (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/dvd-structure.htm) as this may clear up some of your confusion in regards to .vob files and .mpeg files.

then take a look at the Guides (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/guides.htm)
in particular the DVD backup guides (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvdbackup-guides.htm)

i would strongly suggest you look at the tools featured in the 'Speed over Quality' section, in particular DVDShrink, as stewart2000 has already given you a heads up on and which always receives favourable reviews in the One click DVD backup solutions (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=65) forum.

i know that the guides may seem confusing at first but after a few trial and errors you will quickly get the hang of things.

also ...

use the search (http://forum.doom9.org/search.php?s=) button to see if your problem/question has been answered before (and chances are it has), and most important of all, is to read, try for yourself, and choose the method that best suits you.

good luck and enjoy the forum

cheers
