View Full Version : When will Apple add multichannel support to QT? (was "WMV to go?")

from MS website:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Media Audio 9 Professional
The Web's first digital surround-sound codec, Windows Media Audio 9 Professional, is a great match for high-fidelity hardware and computer with 5.1 channel surround sound. It captures full-resolution audio (24-bit/96-kHz sampling) in stereo or 5.1 channel (and even 7.1 channel) surround sound for streaming or download-and-play delivery at 128 to 768 Kbps. Instead of 128 Kbps stereo MP3 files, you can enjoy 5.1 channel audio with superior fidelity at the same bit rate.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.1 surround for streaming, Why is Apple so behind? Or is it really that hard to add 5.1 audio support in Quicktime?
I tried almost everythings i can to get a stream an 5.1 movie from Darwin Streaming Server.
Anyone an idea when next QT might be released and have support for 5.1 sound?
Apple please hurry, I am attempted to follow the Devil. Caint resist long anymore ... *creep*

plz think about using a "title that describes the content of your post", as rule 9) says

apart from that if you would have used search you would have found out that apple is indeed already working on adding aac 5.1 support to quicktime and their aac encoder

Multichannel sound was supposed to come out last spring, according to some "experts", and has been in beta a long time, but for some reason it was delayed. I'd say look for a very re-vamped QT7 early 05 (when OSX 10.4 should come out), including some profiles of H.264 and multichannel sound.
However, there is a difference in supporting decoding of multichannel in the player, and being able to stream it. Are there any apps that stream 5.1 WMA? Not sure.

And there may be a delay in when QT can decode 5.1, and when DSS can stream it.
If you "Caint resist long anymore" you should probably move on and make your pact with the Devil, maybe he'll let you come back. ;-)

Hi

@bond:
did some searches around and on the internet, everywhere the same story as Apple had planned multichan support in QT 6.x, but it didnt made it. Looking for news about the next version is also a hard thing to do. And with the silence around QT i was thinking Apple didnt care about video much since iTunes has Apple attention right now.

@keel:
QT7? wow that is kewl, hope it will support Multichan. Any good source to find out more?
I think Darwin Streaming server is already multichan capable. Well i guess DSS is just sending the packages to the client no matter what is in it isnt? I guess the same for Windows Media Server?

Yes there is a difference. Apps that just stream don't need to know anything about the contents past the container. Basically for WMV the ASF container. For Darwin the MOV or MP4 container. Any legal stream inside those containers will stream fine mono, sterio, or 7.1. As long as the recieving end can decode. Now there are things above and beyond streaming like reducing the number of audio channels for low bitrate links but that has nothing to do with whether Darwin supports it. ;) And BTW they do.

Yup QT is holding up the show.

Why exactly can't someone resist? Streaming such over the internet on home connections is a bit to much ATM especially if you want video as well. If you are just transferring the data across a home LAN there are many better ways to do it since they are small networks which are easily administered and have a large web of trust. I use Samba or NFS to allow all my movies to be played across the network

also apple is currently working hard on adding h.264 support to quicktime, there should also be a link to a sample encode somewhere

@bond:
yes there were a few links i have found, but most of them end up with an 404.

yes idd, it would be much more easy to share everythings on a LAN.
Here comes the but :)
- i have regular visitors at home who have access to our LAN pcs in which i am trying to prevent them from erm "stealing" my collection of movies and music.
- playing through http will mostly end up with an 1gig sized cache.
Maybe i better start implementing DRM for my own files :)

Apple hates it when people break NDAs and they are constantly monitoring all websites that might display any unauthorized screen shots, and have them taken down immediately.

They also like to keep their cards real close to the chest, until they can play them all, at one of its MacWorld or WWD conferences. I imagine we'll see a good dog and pony in SF in January.
I think they previewed H.264 at NAB because people were wondering if they were really working on it, and would it look good. "yes" to both.

I am not defending nor condemning these marketing strategies.

What remains to be seen is what levels and profiles (High Advanced?) will be initially supported, what interoperability there is with other MPEG4 flavors, and minimum hardware and sofware requirements to play H.264.
